Kobbie Mainoo 2/1 to start England's first Euros game; Trent Alexander Arnold 5/4

With the Euros drawing ever closer, we’ve priced up who will start England’s first game against Serbia on 16th June.

To Start for England v Serbia

bet365’s Steve Freeth said: “We’re putting ourselves in Gareth Southgate’s waistcoat and looking at who starts the first game against Serbia.

“The majority of the team picks itself with the likes of Pickford, Walker, Stones, Rice, Bellingham, Saka and after an amazing season, Foden, looking nailed on to start should they get to Gelsenkirchen in one piece.

“The main debates will probably centre around who starts at left back and who will be joining Rice and Bellingham in midfield as England look to get off to a flyer against Serbia.

“Will it be Trippier and Gomez fighting for the left side if Shaw fails to make it and will Southgate go for Alexander-Arnold over a Gallagher or Mainoo?”

Assuming everyone’s fit, Harry Maguire feels like Stones’ most likely defensive partner and is 2/7 to start the first game, though alternatives are available in the form of Marc Guehi, Jarrad Branthwaite and Lewis Dunk.

Mainoo has shown ability and maturity well beyond his years at Manchester United so far – and even in his fledgling Three Lions career – and could be selected to start alongside Rice, but if Southgate prefers a more adventurous option to try and unlock what will no doubt be a compact Serbian defence, he may opt for Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.

We’ve seen Conor Gallagher trialled for England, but his best work is out of possession, and England can expect to see plenty of the ball against Serbia. If Southgate does prefer a more industrious partner for Rice, Gallagher may be the man.

Southgate admitted Shaw is up against it in a race to be fit for the Euros, and there are no guarantees he’ll even make the final 26-man squad.

Kieran Trippier, who’s been deployed at left-back for England in the past, picked up an injury in the post-season friendly for Newcastle, with Ben Chilwell and Levi Colwill also omitted from the preliminary squad, leaving England very threadbare in the position.

The versatile Joe Gomez has played all along the back four and has been included for his ability to fill in a number of roles. With a dearth of left-footed defenders – Branthwaite is the only other left-footed defender in the squad beyond Shaw – Gomez may have to fill in.
