Action from Basel and Vienna takes centre stage

Tennis: This Week's Highlights

With the final ATP Masters 1000 event of the campaign taking place in Paris next week, many of the tour's leading stars are heading to either Basel or Vienna to complete their preparations.

There may be no Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic or Alexander Zverev on the menu, but five of the other top eight in the world are in action.

World number one Carlos Alcaraz and world number three Casper Ruud do battle in Basel, while Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev are among those venturing out to Vienna.

Zverev, who won in Vienna last year, is still sidelined with injury, so a new champion will be crowned in Austria, and plenty of the action can be watched on our Sports Live Streaming platform.

It is a similar scenario for the Swiss Indoors in Basel as this is the first staging since 2019, when the recently retired Roger Federer won his home event for a tenth time.

Alcaraz may have bigger priorities to come

Basel has attracted a stellar cast for the return of its indoor event and there is plenty of motivation for those involved with the Paris Masters fast approaching.

Federer dominated his home event, winning it ten times, and it boasts an impressive list of former champions with Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg and Pete Sampras having also reigned supreme in Switzerland.

Alcaraz, who has climbed his way to world number one despite being just 19 years of age, is likely to attract plenty of support at 10/3.

The Spanish teenage sensation won his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open in September, but struggled on his return to action in Astana earlier this month, losing in the opening round to David Goffin.

Another two-week break could have freshened the youngster up, but Paris and the upcoming ATP Tour Finals will surely be priority and his draw may have been kinder in Basel, too.

An opening-round clash with rising British star Jack Draper is no easy task, while fellow seeds Felix Auger-Aliassime and Pablo Carreno Busta are also lurking in that star-studded top half.

There is better value to be had and the bottom half of the draw could be where punters profit.

Rejuvenated Cilic could roll back the years

There are plenty of players in the bottom half of the Basel draw in decent form, but many of those have been kept busy.

Holger Rune defeated Alex de Minaur in the semi-final of the Stockholm Open last week and those two go at it again in the opening round in Basel.

It won't be easy for either of that pair to follow up their heroics in Switzerland and one player who could prosper from their hectic schedule is Marin Cilic.

The Croatian, a one-time Grand Slam champion, may not be the force of old but he has shown plenty of encouraging signs this season and could be dangerous as he arrives fresh.

Cilic, like top seed Alcaraz, went out early in the Astana Open at the beginning of this month. However, he was runner-up to Djokovic in Tel Aviv prior to that and had also taken eventual champion Alcaraz to five sets at the US Open in September.

The 34-year-old won two titles last year and, at 12/1, with a decent draw to work with, could be overpriced from an each-way perspective.

Cilic faces a qualifier before a likely second-round showdown with Mackenzie McDonald. That could see him line-up against either De Minaur or Rune in the quarter-final, while on recent form he should have little to fear from a potential semi-final opponent Ruud.

Medvedev spearheads super-strong field

World number four and 2021 US Open champion Medvedev headlines a high-quality field in Vienna, and the Russian will be hoping to get his season back on track.

On all counts, it has been a pretty disappointing campaign for former US Open champion Medvedev with his only title triumph this year coming in Los Cabos in August.

Although Medvedev should come through his curtain-raiser with Nikoloz Basilashvili, tougher tests await with impressive Italian Jannik Sinner, classy compatriot Rublev and British number one Cameron Norrie also in his half of the draw.

Norrie appears to have the best of the early schedule and although beaten by Rune in the quarter-final in Stockholm last time out, that could have quite easily blown away the cobwebs.

The Brit is a four-time winner on the ATP Tour and all of those title triumphs have come within the last 18 months, so he could have plenty to say at a nice price in Vienna.

The bottom half of the draw, if anything, is more competitive than the top section with Tsitsipas, Taylor Fritz, Matteo Berrettini and Hubert Hurkacz all holding high hopes.

Throw in the likes of Borna Coric, Frances Tiafoe, Karen Khachanov and Denis Shapovalov and it is a section that looks packed with danger, perhaps best left alone from a punting perspective.
