Horse Racing: The racing week ahead

This week builds towards the Royal Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday while all eyes will be on Paris come Sunday for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Europe's premier middle distance contest is the centrepiece of two magnificent days at Longchamp and we're taking a look ahead to what's in store for racing fans this week.

All the UK and Irish racing action can be followed via our live Sports Streaming Service.

Monday 26th September

It's a busy start to the racing week with six Monday meetings across Britain and Ireland.

They come at Ffos Las, Hamilton, Newcastle (AW) and Down Royal on the Flat, while there's jumps action from Newton Abbot and Roscommon.

The highlight come from the last-named venue via the Grade 3 Ballymore Group Irish EBF Kilbegnet Novice Chase (4.10) where a field of seven was declared for the two-miler.

They include Barry Connell's Enniskerry and the Joseph O'Brien-trained Midnight Run, first and second in a Beginners' Chase at the Galway Festival in July.

Rachael Blackmore is on board the Gigginstown-trained runner-up this time around, while hat-trick seeking Sit Down Lucy is another key player for Peter Fahey following her wins at Galway in July and this month, latterly when easily bagging a Beginners' event by eight lengths over further.

Tuesday 27th September

An excellent afternoon on the level at Ayr is the standout of Britain's four Tuesday meetings. They are joined by Wolverhampton (AW) and Cork on the Flat, while jumps action takes place at Sedgefield and Southwell.

Once more, the feature on the day comes from Ireland via the Listed Navigation Stakes (4.20) at Cork.

The one-mile heat was won last year by Queenship for Joseph O'Brien and the Piltown handler could call on the reliable Patrick Sarsfield, improving filly Statement or three-year-old Voice Of Angels this time around.

Dermot Weld's Emilie Gray - second in this grade at Galway in July - could feature here in the famous Moyglare Stud Farm silks with a prize of €24,000 to the winner.

Wednesday 28th September

The busy trend continues with six midweek meetings scheduled for Wednesday. They come over jumps at Bangor as well as on the Flat at Bellewstown, Catterick, Kempton (AW), Newcastle (AW) and Nottingham.

No doubting where attention will focus here, as Frankie Dettori and Willie Mullins captain teams competing for the inaugural Barney Curley Charity Cup at Bellewstown.

Dettori's side comprises former British and Irish champion Jamie Spencer, Shane Kelly, Tom Queally, Seamie Heffernan, Billy Lee, Chris Hayes and Siobhan Rutledge; while Mullins' picks got him Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Rachael Blackmore lining up alongside current Irish champion Colin Keane, Wayne Lordan, Declan McDonogh, Shane Foley, Dylan McMonagle and Robert Whearty.

The two teams are competing over two races (3.10 and 5.25) with points awarded on a sliding scale down to eighth and the highest-scoring side will be the winner.

Thursday 29th September

Thursday has seven meetings on a busy day. All-weather cards come from Lingfield, Chelmsford and Wolverhampton with turf cards at Salisbury and Bellewstown as well as National Hunt offerings from Warwick and Clonmel.

It's the season finale at Salisbury as the Wiltshire circuit brings down the curtain on another summer of action.

They'll be hoping to see some late-season two-year-olds of interest appearing, including in their feature PKF Francis Clark Conditions Stakes (3.09) which boasts promising entries from the likes of Roger Charlton, Richard Hannon and in-form Roger Varian.

Friday 30th September

The final day of the month and it's another six-pack of racing action. Afternoon fare is from Ascot on the Flat as well as Gowran Park, Fontwell and Hexham over jumps while the sure sign of winter looming is the Friday evening action from Dundalk and Newcastle on the all-weather.

The Listed Noel Murless Stakes (3.45) is Ascot's feature on the first of two days racing for them.

Charlie Appleby's Secret State has won 4-6 starts so far and was second in the Great Voltigeur at York last month behind Deauville Legend and he could be the star name here if the Newmarket trainer opts to step him up in trip to 1m6f for the first time.

Saturday 1st October

The calendar turns to October and there are five UK meetings on Saturday, coming from Ascot, Newmarket, Redcar and Wolverhampton (AW) on the Flat as well as Fontwell over jumps. In Ireland, they race at Killarney and Gowran Park, with the Grade 2 PWC Champion Chase the feature at Willie Mullins' local track.

At Newmarket, they stage the Group 1 Royal Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes where Jane Chapple-Hyam's Saffron Beach and Ralph Beckett's Prosperous Voyage could be amongst the stellar contender and Dermot Weld's Homeless Songs could be an intriguing Irish raider.

It's also day one of the Arc meeting at Paris-Longchamp where Ascot Gold Cup winner Kyprios is 5/4 to win the Group 1 Qatar Prix du Cadran (3.00) on their quality offering.

Sunday 2nd October

UK action on Sunday comes from Kelso and Uttoxeter over jumps while in Ireland the flags go up at Killarney and Tipperary - the latter boasting a trio of Grade 3 contests.

All eyes, however, will be on the Parisian delights with a plethora of Group 1 races spearheaded by the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (3.05) itself at Longchamp.

Irish Champion Stakes winner Luxembourg is 4/1 to win for Aidan O'Brien, while the multiple Group 1-winning mare Alpinista is 6/1 for Sir Mark Prescott and last year's shock German-based winner Torquator Tasso is 8/1 to repeat.

The supporting acts at Longchamp on Sunday include the Prix de l'Opera, the Prix de l'Abbaye and the Prix de la Foret on what is always a spectacular card.
