Rory McIlroy is marginally the most popular outright selection with bet365 customers for The 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon.
There have been 14 different winners of The Open in the last 14 editions since Padraig Harrington successfully defended his title in 2008 and an ultra-competitive field has divided punters, with bet365 trading expert Steve Freeth adding: "Similarly to the vacant England job, everybody seems to have a different opinion and we’re seeing a really good spread of business on so many contenders in The Open."

As detailed in the table above, McIlroy's popularity is not overwhelming and the four-time major champion is marginally above Tommy Fleetwood as the most backed golfer for The Open Championship.
McIlroy was five holes away from ending his 10-year major drought at the U.S. Open in June when his charge disintegrated with two miscalculated putts and the Northern Irishman saw victory slip through his fingers at Pinehurst.
Such was the nature of his collapse, McIlroy opted to spend some time away from the sport in preparation for The Open and 5.9% of bets placed on the outright market are backing the 35-year-old to seal redemption at Royal Troon.
Fleetwood is the second most popular bet, with the Englishman's impressive driving accuracy and superb approach play seemingly a perfect fit for the challenges of a links course.
He is still waiting first win on the PGA TOUR, but Fleetwood has been knocking on the door in competitions and he recorded his best-ever finish at the Masters earlier in the year.
2021 Open champion Collin Morikawa is the next best bet and 5.5% of bet365 punters are backing the American to replicate his Royal St George success at Royal Troon.
Ludvig Aberg is another favoured competitor, while newly-crowned Scottish Open champion Robert MacIntyre will be looking to reward the 5% of customers who are supporting his Open Championship charge, with the Oban-born ace shortening into 30/1 to win his first major.
