Aidan O'Brien's three-year-old enjoyed a sensational juvenile campaign last year, winning the bet365 Superlative Stakes before taking the honours in the Dewhurst Stakes on Future Champions Day at Newmarket.
His performance in the latter led to co-owner Michael Tabor stating that the horse was 'their Frankel', and expectations were high that City Of Troy could dominate in 2024.
He went off as the 4/6 favourite for the 2000 Guineas on his seasonal return last month but he was underwhelming as he finished ninth and 17 lengths behind winner Notable Speech.
His shock defeat blew the market for The Derby wide open, with Arabian Crown temporarily sharing joint-favouritism after a sublime victory in the bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown.
However, an injury setback has put paid to the chances of the Godolphin horse, leaving the likes of Ancient Wisdom and Los Angeles to jostle for favouritism alongside City Of Troy.
Many observers will point to the path Auguste Rodin followed after he bounced back from a disappointing performance in last year's 2000 Guineas to win the Derby, before going on to win the Irish equivalent and November's Breeders' Cup Turf.
O'Brien will be optimistic that another of his stable stars can replicate the feat and if City Of Troy can reproduce his 2023 form, he could take all the beating, despite having to overcome the difficulty of an unfavourable draw in the first stall.
