Iga Swiatek is expected to shine at this year's Olympics, but Racing Post's Adrian Humphries believes Karolina Muchova and Marta Kostyuk can compete for gold in the women's tennis.
Punters arguably have more evidence on which to base their reasoning in this year's Olympics women's singles, with odds-on favourite Swiatek having waltzed to victory on clay in the French Open in four of the last five years in Paris.
World number one Swiatek, who is top seeded for the tournament, could again make light of the opposition in the coming days. But the Olympics brings with it different pressures and, at the prices on show, it may just be worth trying to take on the all-conquering market leader with a couple of opponents who are capable of taking the game to her.
Karolina Muchova - 66/1
The price of Muchova coming up trumps in Paris has already been cut, but that does not necessarily mean that her latest quote is on the short side, especially when you consider how much the resurgent Czech troubled Swiatek in last year's French Open final, which the Pole won 6-2 5-7 6-4 after asserting late on to win her third clay-court crown.
After injury woes, Muchova is back again and looks to be fit and firing. As well as being a French Open finalist, she has made the semi-finals of the Australian and US Opens and the quarter-finals of Wimbledon.
Muchova, who is climbing back up the rankings and is currently at 108th in the WTA chart, was a top-ten player last season, and she reached a high of eighth. Even though she has been drawn in the same half of the draw as Swiatek, backers should not be deterred from supporting the 27-year-old Olomouc native.
Taking on Swiatek in the semis could actually be a positive for Muchova because at that point, there would be even more pressure on the Pole to deliver. The prize in that match would be bronze at best for the loser, so while Swiatek came out the right end of their 2023 Paris clay clash, a similar outcome would be far from guaranteed on this occasion should the luminaries meet.
Marta Kostyuk - 80/1
With Swiatek, Elena Rybakina, Qinwen Zheng, Danielle Collins, Jelena Ostapenko, Emma Navarro, Diana Shnaider, and Muchova in the top half of the draw, the bottom half may take a little less winning.
Second seed Coco Gauff is the highest-ranked player in that section, which also features French Open and Wimbledon finalist Jasmine Paolini, Jessica Pegula, Maria Sakkari, Wimbledon and 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova, Marta Kostyuk, Donna Vekic and Beatriz Haddad Maia as seeds.
Of that octet bidding to come through the bottom half, Paolini, Krejcikova and Haddad Maia merit respect, but a chance can be given to Kostyuk surprising a good few observers. The 22-year-old Ukrainian is a perfectly competent performer who is capable of troubling the big guns when at or near the top of her game.
Kostyuk reached her first Grand Slam quarter-final in the Australian Open in January, so she is clearly going the right way. Kostyuk is quite capable of capitalising should Gauff come up short on a surface which may end up being the American's weakest in time.
