Taylor Fritz has taken a liking to Eastbourne, having claimed the title on three of his last four visits to the English seaside town, and the big-serving American is a warm favourite to prevail in his opening clash with Joao Fonseca.
The tournament top seed won his first Eastbourne title in 2019 with victory over Sam Querrey before regaining his crown in 2022 in another all-American affair against Maxime Cressy.
Last season Fritz made it a hat-trick of wins at Eastbourne by beating Max Purcell in the title decider and he will be keen to head to Wimbledon on the back of another successful trip to the seaside.
Fritz, the world number five, is powerful and armed with a big serve, attributes that are well-suited to being a hit on the grass.
In Brazilian 18-year-old Fonseca, Fritz faces an opponent that is highly-touted and widely regarded as being a potential star of the future.
However, the South American teenager has limited experience on grass and, to date, he has been seen to his best effect on slower terrain.

Best Bet: Taylor Fritz to win 2-0 @ 11/10
Fritz suffered a shock three-set defeat to Frenchman Corentin Moutet in the first round at Queen’s Club last week but that disappointing showing looks best ignored.
The American had claimed a grass-court title in Stuttgart only two days earlier, having overcome Felix Auger-Aliassime and home favourite Alexander Zverev to take the crown.
The quick turnaround was far from ideal but, having now had a week to focus on Eastbourne, he is rightly considered one of the favourites to take the title.
That is because Fritz has won in Eastbourne on three of his last four visits, including last year, with the top seed showing his liking for the grass.
Big servers thrive on grass and that has been the case for Fritz, who has made the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in two of the last three seasons.
With Fonseca having limited experience on grass and seemingly much happier playing on clay, Fritz should take some stopping and a routine win appeals as the best bet.
Ten of the world number five’s last 12 grass-court wins were recorded in straight sets and Fonseca required a deciding set to come past Zizou Bergs in his opening assignment at Eastbourne.
Aaron Ashley says:
The big-serving powers of Fritz make him almost the perfect grass-court performer and, having won all four finals he has contested on this surface, it is hard to see how the inexperienced Fonseca can nullify him.
Fritz has won 12 of his last 14 grass-court matches and he has been beaten only once in his last 14 matches at Eastbourne, reigning supreme to take the title on three occasions.
That shows the task Fonseca is faced with, especially given that five of his last eight grass-court matches have resulted in defeat.
Fritz, having had 10 or more aces in his last nine grass-court encounters, is expected to keep plenty of points short and sweet.
That could lend itself to a few double faults, especially with Fonseca so reliable on the defence. The Brazilian’s first-round win over Belgian Bergs featured 10 double faults.

Fonseca, only 18 years old but already a winner on the ATP Tour, is a player with the potential to go all the way to the top. However, he has plenty to prove on grass and in Fritz he faces Mr Reliable on this terrain,
adds Aaron Ashley.
Fritz has already had a productive grass-court campaign, claiming his fourth title on the surface with his victory in Stuttgart earlier this month, and he is the most decorated male in Eastbourne International history with three title triumphs.
Two Wimbledon quarter-final appearances show that the American thrives on turf in the summer and that gives him a big advantage against Fonseca, more renowned for his exploits on clay.
Fritz will be looking to exploit his big serve against world number 57 Fonseca, although standing at 6' 2" the Brazilian is no stranger to compiling aces.
