Sonay Kartal has powered through to the fourth round at Wimbledon with some confident and dominant displays, but Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova represents a major barrier to a place in the quarter-finals.
Reaching the fourth round of the grass-court Grand Slam tournament is already the London-born Kartal’s best effort in a major singles draw and it could get even better for the first-round conqueror of Jelena Ostapenko.
However, Pavlyuchenkova is possibly one of the best WTA Tour players never to have won a Grand Slam singles title and her power could make life tough for the home favourite at Wimbledon.

There is unlikely to be much in it when Kartal and Pavlyuchenkova take to the court on day seven of Wimbledon, but while it’s not surprising to see the Briton come in for support to triumph it's just possible that the class and experience of Pavlyuchenkova could prevail.
Neither player has done much wrong, as you would expect, and Kartal clearly possesses a steely temperament which will serve her well in her career.
Fighting back from slow starts was perhaps expected in her victories over the limited Viktoriya Tomova, who was in good touch, and the useful Diane Parry.
But Kartal’s best effort by some way came in her curtain-raising win against 2017 French Open champion Ostapenko and that victory alone should tell punters that the home player is capable of defeating anyone on her day.
Pavlyuchenkova has not always displayed solid temperament on court and she is likely to come under greater pressure with the majority of the crowd cheering for Kartal.
But there was a greater sense of self-control regarding the way she calmly reeled in Ajla Tomljanovic and Naomi Osaka after making slow starts against that pair and a similar approach may pay dividends for the 2016 Wimbledon quarter-finalist when she meets Kartal.
Adrian Humphries explains:
Pavlyuchenkova has not always been a byword for coolness on court, but there was a greater sense of self-control in her come-from-behind wins over Tomljanovic and Osaka.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to win
Three-set match
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to serve first double fault
Pays 9/2
Pavlyuchenkova possibly offers value to emerge victorious after a closely fought clash, maybe in three sets over which the world number 50 has won two of her three matches in the tournament.
For the third part of the Bet Builder equation it could pay to back the older player to register the first double fault of the match.
Pavlyuchenkova served 10 double faults in her opener against Tomljanovic and 11 in her second and third-round outings against Ashlyn Krueger and Osaka.
Kartal served two double faults in her opening win over Ostapenko and three in her latest outing Diane Parry, so Pavlyuchenkova looks value at 2/7 to serve the first double fault against the Briton.

Adrian Humphries adds:
Pavlyuchenkova has served a total of 32 double faults in her first three singles outings, so it's likely that she will tally a good few more against Kartal, who served only two in her three-set win over Ostapenko.

Both of these players have made slow starts in two of their first three matches in the past week, so it's difficult to be confident about who will dominate early on in their last-16 clash.
Pavlyuchenkova is in line to face her toughest test yet and, to a degree, her backers often take a leap of faith siding with her to prevail in matches, especially given her high double fault count in the tournament.
However, that is part and parcel of siding with a mercurial talent such as the 2021 French Open runner-up.
