The likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz will fancy their chances of victory as they head to the Shanghai Masters.
With Sinner seeded first and Alcaraz third, the pair are on track for a semi-final collision in the penultimate Masters 1000 event of the 2024 season, which has been staged on hard courts at Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena since 2009.
Novak Djokovic, who has not been seen since a facile 6-0 6-1 Davis Cup win over 773rd-ranked Greek Ioannis Xilas in mid-September, returns to action as fourth seed with second seed Alexander Zverev joining him in the bottom half of the draw.
Hubert Hurkacz is unable to defend his Shanghai Masters title which means there are only two former champions in the 96-man draw for the tournament - four-time winner Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev, who won the title in 2019.
No man has been more successful than Djokovic in this event but the 37-year-old Serb is playing with something to prove after suffering defeat to Alexei Popyrin in the third round of the US Open.
Djokovic fell short in the four Grand Slams this year and while he dug deep to win Olympic gold at the expense of Alcaraz in Paris, there are signs that time is beginning to catch up with him, for all that he's still an obvious title threat.
With recent match action under their belts in Beijing, Alcaraz and Sinner appear better positioned in their pursuit of the Shanghai title and it's Sinner who gets the marginal vote.
The Italian lost to Ben Shelton at the last-16 stage on his Shanghai debut last season but he's shown an improved ability to handle a heavy workload this year, reaching back-to-back finals in Montpellier and Rotterdam in February and Indian Wells and Miami in March.
Sinner touched down in China having not played since winning the US Open but he's enjoyed a solid warm-up in Beijing and he should still have plenty to give in Shanghai.
Alcaraz, meanwhile, was in Davis Cup and Laver Cup action so it's possible that the Spaniard will start to feel the pinch as this tournament reaches the latter stages.
Sinner's draw looks tough on paper but he will expect to overcome Shelton if they clash again in round four while the Italian has won six of his last seven matches against potential quarter-final opponent Medvedev.
The man who Sinner beat in the US Open final could prove to be the best each-way alternative from the bottom half of the draw with Taylor Fritz taken to put up a bold title bid.
While Djokovic is most likely to progress to the final from that half, the Serb has been found wanting in the three Masters 1000 events he's contested this year, falling at the third-round stage in Indian Wells and Rome and the semi-finals in Monte Carlo.
Zverev, who is set to lose his no.2 ranking to Alcaraz on Monday regardless of the result of the Beijing final, was consistent but not brilliant over the North American summer, falling in the quarter-finals in Canada, the semi-finals in Cincinnati and the quarters of the US Open.
Fritz defeated the German in four sets in the last eight in New York before going on to lose to Sinner and the confident Californian will fancy his chances of a repeat performance if the two meet again at the same stage in Shanghai.
The American should appreciate a fast Shanghai hard court.
