Matteo Arnaldi and Flavio Cobolli collide in an all-Italian French Open semi-final on Friday as both players bid to reach their first Grand Slam final.
Both Arnaldi and Cobolli are competing in a semi-final at a major event for the first time in their careers.
However, it perhaps isn't a huge shock to see Cobolli reach the latter stages of the French Open as he is the 10th seed, but Arnaldi has been the surprise package in the men's draw this year.
Arnaldi began 2026 with eight defeats in his first 10 matches as he struggled with a foot injury and he entered this tournament ranked outside the world's top 100, meaning he will leap up the rankings as a result of his run in Paris.
Best Bet - Over 38.5 games @ 10/11
Alternative Bet - Flavio Cobolli to win 3-2 @ 4/1
Bet Builder - Flavio Cobolli to win, Matteo Arnaldi to win the first set, Matteo Arnaldi 10+ aces & Flavio Cobolli 5+ aces @ 20/1
Best Bet: Over 38.5 games @ 10/11
Cobolli is the 2/5 favourite and deservedly so, he is just outside the top 10 in the world rankings and has enjoyed the far stronger season so far, but Arnaldi as a 2/1 underdog has a real chance here as well.
One of the key factors in this last-four showdown is how well these players already know each other.
Cobolli won in four sets when these two players met at the French Open last year and on the ATP Tour the record is level at 1-1, but in their overall head-to-head - which include Challenge event meetings - Arnaldi has the edge with three wins to Cobolli's two.
Outside of competitive matches, the two Italians train together regularly, so they should know each others' games inside out and that could lead to a long contest.
Fatigue was becoming an issue for Arnaldi prior to his quarter-final clash with another Italian, Matteo Berrettini.
However, Berrettini was forced to retire due to injury during the second set, so Arnaldi has had a bit more of a rest ahead of the semi-finals, having previously come through back-to-back five-set matches, so he should be able to stay in touch with Cobolli.
Over 38.5 games would require four close sets or a full five and that seems reasonable given how well-matched these two Italians look.
Indeed, Cobolli's win in Paris last year fell just short of that mark and both players have won a set in four of their five meetings, so reaching at least 39 games seems likely.
Alternative Bet: Flavio Cobolli to win 3-2 @ 4/1
This match is likely to be close, but ultimately Cobolli should be able to come through and secure a place in the final.
Backing the 24-year-old to win in a match where both players win a set at 6/5 is one option, but it looks worth being bold and taking a chance on him prevailing in a five-set thriller.
While Arnaldi may have benefitted from a shorter last-eight tie, he has still spent nearly 20 hours on court and by the fourth or fifth set he will start to tire.
Cobolli should be far fresher as he's only dropped two sets on his way to the semi-finals and his five matches have lasted a total of 13 hours and 1 minute.
That difference could well be huge when these two Italians meet on Friday and it gives Cobolli a clear edge in a match-up between two players who are well versed in each others' games.
Flavio Cobolli to win
Matteo Arnaldi to win the first set

Flavio Cobolli 5+ aces

Cobolli looks the more likely winner on the basis he should come into the match fresher than Arnaldi and he has been a comfortable winner in all five of his matches so far, whereas Arnaldi has had to dig deep on a couple of occasions.
However, Arnaldi should be able to win at least a set and the underdog can take the opener. Arnaldi will be well aware that fatigue will set in at some point so taking a lead is crucial.
He has also won the first set in his last four matches, while Cobolli dropped the first set against Felix Auger-Aliassime in his quarter-final victory.
Arnaldi served 18 aces in his win over Frances Tiafoe and 10 or more looks like an achievable target for him.
The Sanremo-native is averaging 10.75 aces per-match in Paris across his four completed ties, while Cobolli has recorded over five aces in all of his French Open matches so far.
