Marta Kostyuk v Katie Boulter: Tips, Predictions and Odds

The San Diego Open final has a refreshing look to it with Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk and Katie Boulter of Great Britain both aiming to land their first WTA 500 titles.

Both players have won once on the tour, with Kostyuk taking the 2023 ATX Open in Texas and Boulter making her breakthrough in the 2023 Nottingham Open, but those were both at the lower WTA 250 level, so whoever wins will be celebrating the biggest success of their career to date.

Boulter's boyfriend Alex de Minaur is flying in to support her after his success in the Mexican Open on Saturday, with the British number one hoping to make it a double celebration.

Marta Kostyuk To Win Match - 4/6

Both finalists have made similarly impressive improvement over the last 18 months and have the chance to boost their careers further in California on Sunday.

Boulter has blossomed relatively late in tennis terms and at 27 she is six years older than her opponent. The Ukrainian has the edge in the world rankings at 34th and she has been as high as 28th, while Boulter is 49th and has only ever been one place higher than that, which was last month.

Both women will be moving up the list after their success this week but Kostyuk has slightly more overall quality and should find a way to win what could be a close game.

The Ukrainian made a big impression at the Australian Open this year, reaching the quarter-finals where she lost to Coco Gauff. While she made a slow start to this tournament with a three-set win over Ann Li, she has gained strength as the matches have gone on.

The sixth seed beat wild-card Taylah Preston in straight sets in the second round and came back from a set down to beat fourth seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 3-6 6-4 6-3 in her quarter-final.

She really impressed in her semi-final success against top seed Jessica Pegula, winning 7-6 6-1 and taking 12 of the final 14 games in the match. Pegula is ranked fifth in the world and if Kostyuk can play at that level again she will be hard to stop.

3 sets in the match - 6/5

Boulter is riding the crest of a wave too, however, and should give as good as she gets in a battle of two powerful hitters.

The British star opened with a straight-sets win over another Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko, dropping only four games, but had her toughest match in the last 16 where she beat Brazilian second seed Beatriz Haddad Maia 3-6 6-3 6-4.

Boulter has grown in confidence with straight-sets wins over seventh seed Donna Vekic and third seed Emma Navarro and it would be no surprise to see the players sharing the first two sets and heading to a decider.

The San Diego Open final has gone to three sets in each of its two years so far, with Iga Swiatek beating Vekic 6-3 3-6 6-0 in 2022 and Barbora Krejcikova overcoming Sofia Kenin 6-4 2-6 6-4 last year.

The Californian tennis fans might well be treated to another prolonged battle when two well-matched and in-form competitors take to the court.

Bettors may also prefer to combine the two bets above into a wager on Kostyuk to win 2-1 at 3/1.

15+ double faults in the match - 4/5

With so much at stake, it would be no surprise to see plenty of nerves evident on the court at the Barnes Tennis Center and there may be a decent number of service mistakes made by both players.

Taking the final to feature 15 or more double faults could pay off as both players have made plenty of service errors in this tournament, with Kostyuk giving up exactly nine free points to her opponents in three of her matches and 10 in her quarter-final against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Boulter has been better at avoiding service errors but still committed eight, nine and seven double faults in her first three San Diego outings before cutting back to only four in her semi-final.

A long match would increase opportunities for mistakes and bring fatigue into play more too, potentially producing more double faults.

Kostyuk should have the edge in the aces battle having won 2-0, 4-1, 5-0 and 3-0 on aces in her four matches while Boulter has fired down 12 aces but also conceded 11 in the tournament.
