Part of the third combined WTA and ATP 1000 event of the year, the women’s Madrid Open is one of the highlights of the tennis calendar and it should not disappoint this time around.
The clay-court event was won by Aryna Sabalenka in 2023 but the defending champion will face stiff competition this season with Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff among those vying for glory.
The tournament is the first combined event of the clay-court season and acts as great preparation for the French Open, which starts next month.
Elena Rybakina to win - 7/2
Before assessing the best value pick in the outright betting, it is worth outlining why market leader Swiatek is worth taking on.
The clay-court season is typically when Swiatek shines but she does not come into the Madrid Open in blistering form, having failed to reach the final at the Stuttgart Open after an underwhelming last-16 exit at the Miami Open.
She lost only twice on clay in 2023 but already has one defeat to her name on the surface this year and she looks short enough in the betting.
Sabalenka is the obvious pick to capitalise on Swiatek's inconsistency, having won the Madrid Open both last year and in 2021.
But the Belarusian also endured premature exits at each of the Miami Open and Stuttgart Open and the value could instead be with Elena Rybakina.
The 2022 Wimbledon champion has already made five finals on the WTA tour this year, two of which were WTA 1000 events, and she looked in fine form en route to the Stuttgart Open last week, taking down Swiatek and Marta Kostyuk to take the title.
Before that she also made the final of the Miami Open, losing out to Danielle Collins, and she is always worth monitoring.
She finished with a decent 11-2 record on clay last season and is overpriced to go the distance in Madrid at 5/1.
Danielle Collins to win - 14/1
For those after a bigger price in the Madrid Open Women's betting, Collins could be a terrific option.
The American is on a 13-match winning streak heading into the Madrid Open, having claimed her first clay-court title of the season at the Charleston Open at the start of the month.
That title charge featured wins over big names Paula Badosa, Ons Jabeur, Sloane Stephens, Elise Mertens, Maria Sakkari and Daria Kasatkina.
She also has a WTA 1000 title to her name already in 2024, having come out on top at the Miami Open in March.
That was on a different surface in front of a home crowd, but she is a versatile talent and can make her experience count in the Spanish capital.
Collins avoids Swiatek in her half of the draw but could face Sabalenka in the tournament's fourth round.
Other long-shots who could be worth consideration include Marketa Vondrousova, a semi-finalist at the Stuttgart Open who knows how to turn up for big events, and Veronika Kudermetova, who made the last four in Madrid last year.
