Lulu Sun v Emma Raducanu: Prediction, Tips and Odds

There is huge excitement at Wimbledon this year and much of that is down to the resurgence of Emma Raducanu, the Briton who went all the way as a qualifier to win the US Open in 2021.

The All England Club wild-card entry has looked to be right back to her best in her last two matches - Raducanu had played well in her prep events without ever looking ready to add to her Flushing Meadows title from three years ago.

So it seems likely that she has saved her brilliant best for the third Grand Slam tournament of the year in south-west London. And having made the last 16 of Wimbledon three years ago, just before her New York City title charge, Raducanu will feel she is perfectly capable of going all the way on grass in the English capital.

She is a phenomenal performer at her best - an immense force on court and a player whose temperament looks ideally sound - and Raducanu now looks to have every chance of going on to lift a second Slam singles trophy in the coming week.

Her reward for dismissing Elise Mertens and Maria Sakkari with such aplomb is a date with little-known qualifier Lulu Sun - and it will be hugely disappointing if Raducanu’s title tilt fails to gather pace on Sunday.

Lulu Sun v Emma Raducanu betting tips and predictions

Lulu Sun to win under 7.5 games - 4/5

Sun has shown her competitiveness in her first three main-draw outings at Wimbledon, but her first last-16 match in a Grand Slam singles clash could prove a humbling experience for the New Zealand-born Swiss resident.

It’s possible, of course, that Raducanu could elect to take things easier against the unheralded Sun in the wake of her victories over Elise Mertens and Maria Sakkari, matches in which she had clearly steeled herself for the occasion.

But either way, Sun has not been the best of starters at the All England Club this year - she lost the opening set in her two first main-draw outings. And if Raducanu takes the match by the scruff of the neck in the opening set, which is probable, the Briton is a dab hand at front-running and there may well be no way back for the qualifier.

With that in mind, backing outsider Sun to win under 7.5 games against Raducanu is advised. With Mertens having won only three games against the 2021 US Open heroine in round two and Sakkari having tallied just five against her in the last 32, Sun may do seriously well to win eight games on Sunday.

Winning games wasn’t an issue for Sun in her previous main-draw outings - she racked up 14 in just two sets in seeing off Lin Zhu in round three. But with a different story looking entirely possible against Raducanu, it’s likely that Sun will do well to take any kind of hold in the clash against an opponent who knows how to win majors.

Emma Raducanu to win 2-0 - 4/9

Punters can mull over whether to back Raducanu on either total-games handicaps - she’s asked to successfully concede a start of 5.5 games - or in set betting. And considering the Briton could get off to a fast start and then be difficult to dislodge, the safer option might be to back the favourite to win in straight sets.

That option is priced shorter than the total-games quote, but having already advised Sun to win no more than seven games there’s not much point in then advising Raducanu -5.5 games - the Sun bet looks to offer superior value.

Raducanu was as solid as you like when gaining the upper hand against Sakkari - the Greek tried her hardest to get back into the second set of their clash but the Briton just wouldn’t let go.

And if the wildcard can quieten high-class performers like Sakkari and Mertens in fine style, it will be hugely disappointing if she fails to hush Sun, who is playing in only her second Slam main draw in her career, in similar fashion.

Sun has already downed Qinwen Zheng, who was runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka in the Australian Open in January. However, Chinese ace Zheng is considerably more comfortable on hard courts than she is on grass, so it may pay not to overrate the form of Sun’s comeback win over the eighth seed.

Raducanu, meanwhile, will be a lot more familiar with the demands of grass-court tennis than Zheng, so this looks an altogether tougher task for Sun.
