Sebastian Korda v Carlos Alcaraz: Prediction, Tips and Odds

It has been a stop-start European clay-court campaign for Carlos Alcaraz this season but he has eased through the first two rounds of the French Open to set up a third-round battle with Sebastian Korda.

Alcaraz can draw confidence from the fact he has won three of his previous four meetings with the American, although the Spaniard looked a little shaky at times in the second round against Jesper De Jong, despite winning in four sets.

As for Korda, he took down South Korean ace Kwon Soon-woo in four sets in the second round and he is bidding to reach the fourth round in Paris for only the second time in his career.

With the edge in the head-to-head and 18 wins from 23 matches on the ATP tour this year, it is easy to see why Alcaraz is favourite to win this match and he should get over the line.

The two-time Grand Slam champion - US Open in 2022 and Wimbledon in 2023 - can also be a danger on the slower terrain and reached the semi-finals of last year's French Open.

The men's draw looks the most open it has been in years and Alcaraz is one of the title contenders looking to capitalise.

His one and only title of the season came at the Indian Wells Masters in March but he has since been hampered by a forearm injury which has disrupted his clay-court preparations.

Indeed, Alcaraz was forced to pull out of both the Monte-Carlo Masters and Barcelona Open before making a return at the Madrid Open.

Playing in the Spanish capital, though, seemed to worsen his injury and he then had to withdraw from the subsequent Italian Open.

Fortunately for Alcaraz he was fit in time for the season's second Grand Slam but it is clear his injury means he is not operating at full tilt.

And his stamina was questionable in the second round against De Jong, who eased to a 6-2 win in the third set.

Alcaraz got on top of him again in the fourth set but he could again be pushed close by 27th seed Korda, who will be his toughest opponent yet in Paris this year.

Alcaraz can win but it will not be straightforward and another 3-1 success for the Spaniard is a good way to go in the betting.

Those keen to back Alcaraz to win this match 3-1 should also consider a bet on this match to feature a total of four sets.

It is hard to envisage a straight-sets demolition from Alcaraz given his niggling injury and third-set capitulation against De Jong last time out.

But Korda also looks unlikely to make this match go the distance given he has won only two sets in the four previous meetings between these players.

Both players are fresh from four-set battles in the second round and it could be a similar outcome when they lock horns on the Philippe-Chatrier court.

The final bet to consider is a wager on Korda at +7.5 on the games handicap.

Alcaraz won the games count in the second round 20-15 so would not have covered a handicap of -7.5 on that occasion and he will be hard-pressed beating Korda by a bigger margin.

Korda has not had the most explosive clay-court campaign of his career but he can be an awkward opponent and pushed Daniil Medvedev close on the slower surface in the Madrid Open in April, losing 5-7 7-6 6-3.
