Jenson Brooksby vs Dan Evans Tips, Predictions and Bet Builder

It has been a turbulent time for Dan Evans, but the British veteran is back playing some good stuff and he will be hoping a home crowd can inspire him to a quarter-final success over Jenson Brooksby at the Eastbourne Open.

Evans was ranked inside the top 30 two years ago, but injuries and a loss of form had briefly seen him slip outside the world’s top 200.

However, the 35-year-old beat former Queen's champion Tommy Paul 6-4 3-6 6-3 to reach the Eastbourne quarters, showing that there is still life in his legs just yet.

Evans suggested a potential return to form at Queen’s two weeks ago, overcoming world number 14 Frances Tiafoe, while he also got the better of a top-50 player in Miomir Kecmanovic in round one at Eastbourne.

But it is the three-set win over second seed Paul, the world number 13, which has British hopes high of seeing a potential home champion at the seaside venue.

Evans now turns his attention to Brooksby who, like the Brit, is currently housed outside the world’s top 140.

Brooksby has recorded straight-set wins over Francisco Comesana and Nuno Borges to make the final eight, with the 24-year-old showing some of the form that has seen him make four ATP Tour finals.

This represents a huge occasion for both players, in what is their first career meeting, but Evans’ experience could be a crucial factor.

Jenson Brooksby vs Dan Evans Prediction

Best Bet: Over 23.5 games @ 10/11

Having the backing of a passionate home crowd and the addition of his extra experience, should give Evans a strong chance of making the semi-finals at Eastbourne.

Wins over Kecmanovic and Paul read extremely well and the most impressive aspect, given he is now 35 years of age, is that he was able to battle through in three sets.

Evans forced 14 break-point opportunities against world number 13 Paul and that shows that he is playing to an extremely high level.

However, five of his last eight matches on grass have gone to a deciding set, while his Queen’s exit to Brandon Nakashima was also a battle, with the Brit enduring a 7-5 7-6 loss.

Therefore, with Brooksby coming in off the back of two 2-0 wins and feeling fresh, backing a lengthy quarter-final contest could be the approach to take.

Ten of Evans' last 16 grass-court matches have gone to a deciding set, so over 23.5 games must make plenty of appeal.

Aaron Ashley says:

Evans is a player who wears his heart on his sleeve, so he will go down swinging in front of a home crowd. Back playing at the highest level he has for some time, he has plenty of reason to be feel optimistic.

Having battled past Kemanovic and Paul in three sets, while also claiming the scalp of Tiafoe at Queen’s, Evans must be riding the crest of a wave and his new-found belief could take him to the semi-final.

Upsetting those three players in recent weeks, all of whom are top-40 operators, reads well in the context of this match and Brooksby may be flattered to have made the last eight given his victims - Comesana and Borges - are mainly clay-court performers.

That said, having lost at least a set in nine of his last 10 matches, Evans rarely makes things easy for himself and may have to dig deep to fend off the American's challenge.

Finally, over 9.5 games in the opening set must appeal. Breaks of serve, especially early doors, may be hard to come by and the first set in four of Evans' last five matches featured 10 or more games.

Aaron Ashley adds:

Evans rarely disappoints in his bid to provide entertainment and value to spectators and they should be prepared for another topsy-turvy encounter.

Tactics and Form

Evans has seen a big decline in performance over the last few seasons, but this grass-court campaign has sparked something for him and he has defeated two American top-16 performers in recent tournaments.

Home-court advantage is a big aid to his chances too and he should see this as a huge opportunity as he seeks to claim a third ATP Tour title.

Brooksby, the younger man by 11 years, still has plenty of potential, but he has had a relatively easy draw and may find that his British opponent is playing with too much confidence and swagger.
