Jasmine Paolini v Mirra Andreeva: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Jasmine Paolini and Mirra Andreeva are both featuring in their first ever Grand Slam semi-final and, while that adds pressure to the situation, the fearless Russian should handle it to reach the French Open title decider.

Andreeva is the youngest Grand Slam semi-finalist since a certain Martina Hingis, who went on to claim five major titles.

It is too soon to suggest Andreeva will do similar, but it looks likely that she will contest for Grand Slam silverware for many years to come given her natural ability and the tools that she possesses.

She showed great skill and composure to come through a quarter-final epic with world number two Aryna Sabalenka, winning in three sets after losing the opener in a tiebreak.

Paolini also sent shockwaves through Paris with her three-set quarter-final victory over world number four Elena Rybakina, although the Kazakhstan player was below par and is at her most vulnerable on clay.

Andreeva definitely achieved more with her upset win over Sabalenka and she can live up to her promise in what makes for an intriguing last-four encounter.

Mirra Andreeva to win - 4/6

Andreeva has reached the semi-final despite this being only her fifth ever appearance in a Grand Slam tournament and may go one step further by sealing her place in Saturday’s final.

She hinted at being a potential star of the future when making the fourth round of Wimbledon last summer and she reached the same stage of the Australian Open in January.

Her run to the last four in Paris means she has won 14 of her 18 Grand Slam matches, showing a skill and temperament that is extremely rare given her lack of experience.

Andreeva reached the quarter-final in Madrid at the beginning of May and that suggested that she could go well in Paris with the clay clearly posing no problems.

The world number 38 defeated Paolini in the Spanish capital, overcoming the Italian 7-6 6-4 in what was their only previous meeting.

And, with the fearless Andreeva expected to manage the situation better than her opponent, that form can be upheld.

Both have an aggressive style of play and the match will be determined by who hits the most winners, but Andreeva's added power and height gives her the edge.

She fired 43 winners in her semi-final victory over Sabalenka and a repeat of that would be tough for Paolini to live with.

The Italian clearly deserves her place in the last four but her last three matches have gone to a deciding set and she has profited from a pretty soft schedule.

While Rybakina is a big scalp, she has looked vulnerable on clay and prior to that her past four opponents were all ranked outside the world’s top 70.

Over 8.5 breaks of serve - 4/5

Breaks of serve are a common theme in the women’s game and, with this likely to be a nervy occasion given what is at stake, this semi-final should prove no different.

In Paolini’s three-set victory over Rybakina, there were 12 breaks of serve while Andreeva’s win over Sabalenka featured 14.

With the possibility of this going long, taking over 8.5 breaks of serve at 4/5 must make plenty of appeal.

When these two met in Madrid at the end of April, there were 11 breaks of serve despite the fact that Andreeva triumphed 7-6 6-4.

Both players adopt an attack-minded game and hitting winners will be the aim, but that can also lead to plenty of unforced errors and, hopefully, many break-point opportunities.
