Jannik Sinner v Tomas Machac: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Jannik Sinner's superb season has continued at the Shanghai Masters and the Italian is long odds-on to take down Tomas Machac in the semi-finals at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena on Saturday.

Sinner has established himself as the ATP Tour's hard-court king this year, claiming Grand Slam wins at the Australian and US Opens, as well as Masters 1000 titles in Miami and Cincinnati, rising to world no.1 in the process.

The 23-year-old Italian, who saw off old rival Daniil Medvedev to reach this stage, is as short as 1/9 to beat Machac.

However, the improving Czech demonstrated his appetite for an upset in the quarter-finals, stunning Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets, and he is 11/2 to pull off another shock.

Tomas Machac +4.5 games - 1/1

Machac downed the ATP's no.2 when he knocked out Alcaraz in the last eight of the Shanghai Masters and now he'll attempt to go one better when he takes on the highest-ranked player in the world in this semi-final.

The 23-year-old has been threatening a big hard-court run for some time.

He defeated Andrey Rublev and Andy Murray in Miami in March before losing out 6-4 6-2 to Sinner in the quarter-finals, then he reached the round of 16 at the US Open at the beginning of last month, where he found Britain's Jack Draper too strong.

Machac also made the semi-finals in Tokyo a fortnight ago, losing a three-set match to Ugo Humbert, then he produced the best performance of his career to down Alcaraz 7-6 7-5 on Thursday, ending the Spaniard's 12-match winning run.

Sinner's unbeaten spell stretches back only to the beginning of this tournament - the Italian lost out to Alcaraz in the China Open final last week - but he's won 20 of his last 21 matches, with titles coming at the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open.

Having also won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open at the start of the season, the world no.1 has established himself as the ATP's top hard-court performer, so Machac faces a daunting task in pulling off another upset.

However, his continued improvement suggests he's in with a chance of at least keeping it close against Sinner, who was ruthless in dispatching Medvedev on Thursday, but has looked vulnerable at times, including when needing three sets to beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the third round.

While Sinner dominated their only previous clash in March, Machac was ranked 60th in the world at the time and he's since embarked on a steady rise which will culminate in a top-25 debut at the end of the Shanghai Masters.

The powerful Czech served well against Alcaraz, who was only able to break him on one occasion and a similar performance should see him stay on the right side of a 4.5-game handicap.

Over 0.5 Total Tie Breaks in Match - 13/8

If this semi-final turns into a closer contest than the odds suggest, there is a decent chance that a tie break is contested.

Sinner was forced to go the distance against both Etcheverry and then Ben Shelton in the quarter-finals and, while his victory over Medvedev was dominant in terms of its 6-1 6-4 scoreline, the Italian forced only four break points in the match, winning three of them.

Machac is serving well enough to keep things competitive and, while conditions in Shanghai are not as fast as in previous years, there's still potential for at least one set to go the distance.
