There’s a belting semi-final in prospect between US Open top seed and world number one Jannik Sinner and hugely talented Briton Jack Draper in New York City on Friday night.
Sinner is a warm order with the oddsmakers at 1/6 but it would not be a huge surprise to see the encounter pan out a lot more closely than the pre-match betting would suggest.
Italian ace Sinner is bidding to make it two Grand Slam hard-court titles in the same year following his major breakthrough triumph in the Australian Open in January.
But while the world number one is part of the current big three - Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic exited the New York singles early - it may not be long before Draper joins those luminaries at the top of the sport.
This fortnight in the Big Apple has been a huge one for Draper, who won his first ATP Tour title on the Stuttgart grass in June.
Jack Draper to win at least two sets against Jannik Sinner - 7/4
Sinner did well to dig deep to defeat Tommy Paul and Daniil Medvedev in his last two outings at the US Open. But while the Italian is clearly in a good place under the tutelage of his coach Darren Cahill, even the world number one may struggle to end Draper’s brilliant run in the final Grand Slam tournament of the year.
It may be going slightly overboard to describe Draper as unstoppable, but there is a lot of quality behind his power game, and despite being a big outsider on Friday night, he could prove difficult to thwart.
Draper is 4/7 to win at least one set, a price that could interest big-hitters, but the 22-year-old from Surrey is also overpriced to win two sets against Sinner.
The Sutton ace, son of former Lawn Tennis Association supremo Roger Draper, already has a victory to his name over Sinner. He beat the Italian 7-6 7-6 at the Queen’s Club in 2021 when a teenager.
Draper probably had more grass-court hours under his belt than Sinner that day, but it’s still a sizeable pointer to their second clash. And given the huge strides that the Stuttgart champion has made in the last fortnight, Sinner may do well to keep tabs on his opponent.
Jack Draper to beat Jannik Sinner - 4/1
Draper is only a year younger than Sinner, but he is an inch taller and around 10kg heavier, which means the Briton is likely to pack a punch against the top seed.
Sinner found a way to get on the front foot against Paul, who broke him early in the first set of their fourth round outing, and Medvedev. But doing that against Draper could prove a great deal trickier for the Melbourne Park champion.
It probably goes without saying that handicap punters can also side with Draper at 8/11 in receipt of a start of 6.5 games, but in a nutshell Sinner will do well simply to win this match, let alone prevail in four sets or even three.
Questions should be asked about whether the outsider has a game-plan should he come under pressure, but the feeling is that it may be the market leader who feels the heat.
Punters should know that while Sinner is a fine player, his ascent to power has been one that has required time and learning.
Draper, in contrast, who has yet to drop a set in the tournament, has risen to the notice of many tennis fans in a flash and, handily for him and his supporters, he insists he has more levels to go to should he need them in this last-four battle.
Draper defeated former world number one Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets at the Queen’s Club this year so having seemingly taken a step-up on hard courts in the last two weeks, nobody will be safe against the rapidly improving Briton.
