Australian Open Men's Final: Prediction, Tips and Odds

The top two seeds have emerged to set up a blockbuster Australian Open final and Racing Post’s Aaron Ashley has picked out his two best bets in the Melbourne Park title decider between defending champion Jannik Sinner and world number two Alexander Zverev.

Sinner claimed his maiden Grand Slam crown at last season’s Australian Open but, having won at the US equivalent at the back end of 2024, is now on the hunt for his third piece of Major silverware.

For Zverev it is a very different story and he is bidding to make it third time lucky, having finished runner-up at the 2020 US Open and last season’s French Open.

The German blew leads in both of those Grand Slam finals before losing in five and this could be another war of attrition against Sinner, who has found things tough when coming up against Zverev in recent times.

Jannik Sinner v Alexander Zverev betting tips and predictions

Over 39.5 games - 5/6

World number one Sinner is the defending champion and routine 3-0 victories over home favourite Alex De Minaur and big-serving American Ben Shelton in the last two rounds would indicate that he is finding peak form at the perfect time.

But Zverev has been operating at the top of his game too and he should be in pretty good shape given his semi-final rival Novak Djokovic was forced to retire after losing an opening-set tiebreak.

With the pair having only dropped two sets apiece across their six tournament wins, there should be plenty left in the tank and that means this could turn into quite a battle.

Both players excel on serve, so breaks will be hard to come by, and that should lend itself to a lengthy contest, with the strong possibility of five sets.

The last three meetings between the pair have gone to a deciding set and Zverev has had a lot to celebrate in recent showdowns with Sinner, winning four of their last five rivalries.

Sinner did emerge victorious in their latest rivalry in the semi-final in Cincinnati in August but the 7-6 5-7 7-6 scoreline shows that it was a topsy-turvy encounter settled by extremely fine margins.

But Zverev prevailed in a five-set epic with Sinner in the fourth round of the 2023 US Open and there are plenty of reasons to believe that this Melbourne Park title decider could follow a similar pattern.

The German has blown leads in his previous two Grand Slam finals before losing in five but those past experiences should give him something to work with and going long on games looks the best approach.

Five sets - 9/4

Sinner came from two sets down to defeat Daniil Medvedev in five in last season’s Australian Open final and there is every chance this becomes another slog to the winning line.

Zverev’s two Grand Slam finals also went the distance while the last three meetings between this pair, including in a Major at the US Open two years ago, have been finalised in a deciding set.

In truth, there is little to split this pair on current form and both possess similar weapons, so it would be easy to see them cancel each other out.

With that in mind, having an interest in a five-set contest should make plenty of appeal with neither likely to give an inch in their pursuit of silverware.
