Jack Draper v Jaume Munar: Prediction, Tips and Odds

British number one Jack Draper is featuring in the main draw of Cincinnati for the first time and he should celebrate the occasion with a relatively comfortable first-round victory over Spanish qualifier Jaume Munar.

Draper has always been regarded as a player with the potential to challenge for Grand Slam and Masters 1000 titles in the years to come and, now 22, it is time that he starts to deliver on that promise with more consistency.

The London-born star lifted his maiden title on the ATP Tour on the grass of Stuttgart in June and, while recent efforts have been underwhelming, these quick conditions should be well-suited to his big serve and powerful groundstrokes.

In Munar, Draper faces an opponent that is ranked 61 places below him in the world rankings while the Spaniard is also more renowned for his performances on clay.

Munar tends to save his best for the slower surface and often struggles on faster terrain, although qualifying wins over Hugo Gaston and Lorenzo Sonego suggest he is in decent touch.

It was disappointing to see Draper limp to a 7-5 6-2 defeat to Jordan Thompson in Montreal last time out, but that was his first performance since the Olympic Games and his first hard-court match since Miami in March.

It isn’t easy to turn your attention to a new surface at the drop of a hat, but Draper has a game well suited to the quicker surface and there has been plenty of evidence of that already this season.

The Brit finished runner-up to Jiri Lehecka in Adelaide in January and then was a semi-finalist in Acapulco in March, when he was forced to retire at 1-1 against world number 10 Alex De Minaur.

With a grass-court title under his belt in Stuttgart two months ago, Draper is certainly heading in the right direction and he will be hoping for a strong finish to the season, especially with the US Open upcoming.

Draper has won nine of his 15 completed matches on a hard court this season and he should be too powerful for Munar, who had lost six of his last seven starts before qualifying for the main draw of this event.

The Spaniard is very much a clay-court specialist and rarely threatens on a hard court or grass, so is understandably vulnerable against the world number 28 who has the capabilities to go even higher.

Draper, who stands at 6ft 4in tall, is blessed with a giant serve and he is extremely hard-hitting, something which should ensure he has Munar’s measure.

But he may also be worth backing to win 2-0 as four of Munar’s last six defeats have come in straight sets, while there has to be some concern with how he will adapt to the pace of the States against a player of Draper’s quality and intensity.

Draper’s main weapon is his serve and it could be worth chancing him to strike 10 or more aces, something which has occurred in three of his last five matches.

A three-set contest should see it land, but even two sets may allow for it as well, especially if those sets go deep. A tie-break would help matters further.

In Munar’s final qualifier against Sonego, the Italian had eight aces and Draper is a more devastating server than he is.

In Draper’s last six hard-court matches played over a best-of-three format, the Brit’s ace totals have read 4, 20, 10, 4, 5 and 11, all of which suggests 12/5 on him reaching double figures against Munar may be a touch overpriced.
