Jannik Sinner is favourite to win the ATP Indian Wells after the tournament's number one seed Novak Djokovic was knocked out in the third round by 20-year-old lucky loser Luca Nardi.
Five-time Indian Wells winner Djokovic was competing in his first event since losing to Sinner in the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January, but looked far from his sensational best as he crashed out to the world number 123 Nardi.
Prevailing 6-4 3-6 6-3 over the legendary Djokovic, Nardi has become the lowest-ranked player to ever beat the Serbian in an ATP Masters 1,000 or Grand Slam event.
The Italian youngster's famous triumph is even more remarkable considering he had actually been beaten in the final round of Indian Wells qualifying by David Goffin, before being given the call-up to compete as a lucky loser when Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry was forced to pull out of the competition with injury.
Djokovic's shock defeat has opened up the race to be crowned ATP Indian Wells champion, with Italian Sinner, Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and world number four Daniil Medvedev the current frontrunners in the betting.

Australian Open winner Sinner appears the player to beat in California after his impressive start to the 2024 season, with the Italian safely through to the fourth round where he will face promising American Ben Shelton.
Reigning Indian Wells champion Alcaraz will be desperate to retain his title, with the 20-year-old picking up a convincing 6-2 6-3 win over Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the third round.
Daniil Medvedev is also well fancied as third favourite in the betting behind youthful duo Sinner and Alcaraz, with the Australian Open runner-up set to take on the experienced Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round at Indian Wells.
Dark horse shouts for the Indian Wells title include Norwegian Casper Ruud, number 17 seed Tommy Paul, Australian Open semi-finalist Alexander Zverev and the 2022 winner of the BNP Paribas Open Taylor Fritz.
