Iga Swiatek v Jessica Pegula: Prediction, Tips and Odds

The cream is slowly rising to the top at the 2024 women's US Open and there is a cracker of a quarter-final on the cards on Wednesday night as top seed Iga Swiatek takes on American ace Jessica Pegula.

Swiatek won the US Open as recently as 2022 and will be looking to reclaim her title at Flushing Meadows, while Pegula is targeting a first Grand Slam semi-final.

Both players enter the match in exceptional form with neither having dropped a set in New York and a pulsating affair could be on the cards.

Iga Swiatek to win 2-1 - 13/5

Swiatek is renowned for her quality on clay - she has four French Open titles to her name at the age of 23 - but the US Open is clearly her second-favourite Grand Slam.

It is the only other major she has won and she had a win percentage of 80 percent at Flushing Meadows prior to this season's tournament.

And while her preparations for the season's final Grand Slam were underwhelming, Swiatek has bulldozed her way through the first four rounds of the US Open.

Her win over Liudmila Samsonova in the round of 16 was particularly impressive. There was just one break of serve in the first set but in the blink of an eye, the match was out of sight for Samsonova with Swiatek racing into a 5-0 lead in the second set before winning the match 6-4 6-1.

With a first-serve win percentage of 88 percent, there was a ruthlessness to Swiatek's game which should make any player fear her.

Indeed, it was the kind of display she has shown time and time again at the French Open and when she is on a roll, she is near-impossible to stop.

That does not bode well for Pegula, who is playing the tennis of her life at the moment but has been stung by the draw.

Playing in front of a home crowd always gives her a chance and she came into this season's US Open having won the WTA Toronto and reached the final of the WTA Cincinnati.

But previous achievements will count for nothing on Wednesday and Swiatek knows how to dig deep in these kinds of matches, whereas a Grand Slam semi-final is uncharted territory for Pegula.

A Swiatek win therefore looks likely but there is every chance this match will go to three sets and a 2-1 win for the top seed appeals at 13/5.

Jessica Pegula +2.5 games on first set handicap - 8/11

The fact Pegula has not dropped a set at Flushing Meadows of course means she has won the opening set of each of her matches and she can make a bright start to this quarter-final.

The early exchanges between Swiatek and Pegula are sure to be tense and both players are capable on serve with the latter herself having fired down six aces in victory over Diana Shnaider in the round of 16.

Swiatek was pushed close by Samsonova in the first set of her last-16 tie before running away with it in the second set and this match could also have a tentative start, so back Pegula to cover her first-set handicap of +2.5 games at 8/11.
