Ugo Humbert is a strong favourite to progress to round two of Wimbledon with a victory over legendary compatriot Gael Monfils, but given the history between the Davis Cup teammates, their sixth career meeting looks almost booked to entertain and last for four or five sets.
Humbert is one of the tougher players to predict on the ATP Tour. He’s laconic and unhurried, so it’s very much of case of “after you, Claude” when he takes to the court against a fellow countryman.
Monfils may not be that bothered about winning. At his age, and given the way he throws his body around the court, it’s a wonder he’s still out there performing in the first place. Yet Monfils, as with his wife Elina Svitolina, still has much to offer and both remain fine players.

The story tends to remain the same when the many French players clash in long matches and punters can try to use that knowledge to their advantage.
Monfils could upset the odds, but aged 38 and with retirement not far around the corner, he’s unlikely to have enough to prevent his 27-year-old opponent from moving into the second round.
Humbert still lacks proactivity on court so, given that Monfils is still capable of the odd star turn, he ought to play his part in the proceedings, whether that be winning one, two or maybe even three sets. Stranger things will have happened.
Adrian Humphries explains:
A 3-0 victory to Humbert is the likeliest outcome according to the bookmakers’ set betting odds. But it would still go down as a big surprise were Monfils not to pull the odd set or two out of the bag.
We’ve pretty much explained that Humbert is the likelier victor but possibly not in straight sets - and that means that two of our three Bet Builder selections are covered - and that just leaves the tiebreak factor.
You don’t need to be Einstein to appreciate that long matches are a distinct possibility when this pair meet, although long matches don’t always mean long sets.
Two of their five previous meetings have seen tiebreaks contested, although two of those five meetings also failed to be played out in their entirety.
But in the blistering heat that is forecast for London on Tuesday, the pair will most likely be taking their time - and we may even see matches postponed due to the high temperatures.

Adrian Humphries adds:
Long matches don’t necessarily mean long sets, but with another potentially lengthy encounter in store between these compatriots and friends, it makes sense to expect at least one 7-6 set.

Tactics could go out of the window when both players bed in for what could well be a prolonged first-round encounter.
Humbert’s form is where it is usually to be found - okay without being anything special - while since the start of the clay season, Monfils has victories to his name over only Fabian Marozsan, Borna Gojo and Hugo Dellien.
That form itself explains why Humbert is 2/5 for victory, but there are other ways to boost the price.
