Emma Raducanu is hoping to make it two wins out of two on grass over Marketa Vondrousova when the pair meet for a place in the third round of Wimbledon on Wednesday, but it’s difficult to have confidence in the Briton stepping things up against a red-hot opponent.
Raducanu beat Vondrousova 6-2 6-4 on the way to reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2021, months before her incredible US Open triumph.
But Vondrousova has since beaten the Briton on two separate occasions, both times in straight sets. And while Raducanu is capable of producing lights-out tennis on her day, the way she toiled to see off Mimi Xu in her opener suggests she may struggle to produce her A-game on Wednesday.

Emma Raducanu beat Marketa Vondrousova 6-2 6-4 at Wimbledon in 2021, but the Czech has won their last two meetings 6-1 6-1 and 6-3 6-4 on hard courts
Best Bet: Marketa Vondrousova to win first set @ 8/13
Vondrousova has been electric at the start of her matches in recent weeks and her opponents have tended to step up their challenges in the second set of their clashes.
The Czech, who is bidding to regain the Wimbledon women’s singles title she won two years ago, won six of the first eight games she contested against world number one Aryna Sabalenka in their Berlin grass-court semi-final the week before last.
That’s tennis of the highest standard because Sabalenka is perfectly at home on the nippy green terrain, and so Raducanu may struggle to do her best work early on in her last 64 meeting with Vondrousova.
It’s possible, of course, that Raducanu could come to challenge more in the second set and that may be the Briton’s best hope of success, assuming she doesn’t suddenly produce her best from the outset on Wednesday.
Vondrousova is 8/15 to progress to the round of 32, but there may be better value in backing the favourite to make a fast start against Raducanu.
Adrian Humphries explains:
Marketa Vondrousova has won the first set in all six of her matches in the short grass-court swing and Emma Raducanu may not be playing well enough to end her opponent’s run of fast starts on Wednesday.
Marketa Vondrousova -2.5 games handicap (4/5)
Emma Raducanu to win under 11.5 games (Evs)
Marketa Vondrousova first break of serve (4/6)
Pays 8/5
Another fast start from Vondrousova, in which she is likelier than Raducanu to break serve first, could well make a 2.5 games concession from the Czech favourite difficult for the Briton to overturn.
And while Raducanu may do her best work in the latter of the first two sets, she may still do well to stop Vondrousova from winning in straight sets, so backing the outsider to win no more than 11 games may be prudent.

Adrian Humphries adds:
Raducanu may get more opportunity to prosper in the second set than in the first, but if she doesn’t find her A-game the Briton may be looking at an early bath.
Raducanu has been pretty adept at producing her best tennis on demand on occasions in the past, but the 2021 US Open champion may not be certain to keep on coming up with the goods like that when she has generally been performing below her best.
We know that Raducanu is capable of upsetting the odds. But we also know that Vondrousova, in the light of her recent impressive Berlin title charge, is marking herself down now as one the world’s best operators on grass courts.
