The tennis campaign concludes with the Davis Cup Finals, where eight countries are still in the hunt to be crowned champions, and Racing Post's Aaron Ashley has picked out his two best bets for the season finale at the Martin Carpena Arena in Malaga, Spain.
All eyes will be on Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal as he bids farewell to the game after 24 years as a professional, and he helps form a star-studded team alongside Carlos Alcaraz.
However, world number one Jannik Sinner is the man of the moment, having won the ATP Finals in Turin only last week, and his Italian team will have high hopes of defending last season’s title.
Italy defeated Australia in last season’s final and they have again formed a solid side, although a quarter-final with the Americans looks a daunting prospect for them.
Canada, Germany, Argentina and the Netherlands complete the strong octet and the competition will take place over five days, getting underway on Tuesday 19th November and concluding with the final on Sunday 24th November.
The format throughout consists of two singles and a doubles, with the first team to get to two points advancing to the next stage of the event.
Italy to win - 13/8
Armed with home support, it is easy to see why Spain are strongly fancied in the betting as they bid to give Nadal the send off he truly deserves.
They also have the easier route, starting with a quarter-final against the Netherlands before a potential last-four rumble with Germany or Canada.
However, Nadal’s well-being has to be taken on trust and there was only minor encouragement to take from his appearance in the Six Kings Slam Exhibition in October, when he endured straight-set defeats to Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.
Prior to then, Nadal hadn’t played competitively since the Olympics in July and the 38-year-old is evidently not the force he once was.
With superstar teammate Alcaraz also under a cloud at present, having lost five of his last nine matches, this looks like a time to take Spain on and that makes Italy extremely difficult to oppose.
Not only are Italy the defending champions, but they are represented by the current world number one Sinner and he is looking virtually impossible to defeat on current form.
Sinner capped off a stellar 2024 by claiming his eighth title of the year at the ATP Finals last time out where he won all five of his matches in straight sets.
It means that the 23-year-old has registered 26 wins from his last 27 matches, a run that includes his second Grand Slam title of the season at the US Open, and it is hard to see him dropping any points for his team.
Sinner will be partnered by Lorenzo Musetti, as he was in last season’s title triumph, and with Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori a potent doubles partnership they have all bases covered.
Italy face Argentina in the quarter-final and should have too much quality for them before a last-four test against last season’s runners-up Australia or the USA.
The Americans, led into battle by Tommy Paul and recent ATP Finals runner-up Taylor Fritz, should have the edge in that one but they may struggle to live with the Italians.
Canada each-way - 8/1
With doubts surrounding the form of Alcaraz and fitness of Nadal, hosts Spain could be worth taking on in the bottom half of the draw and Canada could be the surprise package.
Canada take on Germany in the quarter-finals and they may have the edge in that encounter, especially with the Germans missing their best player in Alexander Zverev.
Canada are also without their most-prized asset in Felix Auger-Aliassime, but Denis Shapovalov, Gabriel Diallo and Milos Raonic helps form a pretty potent team and they should have the beating of Germany, who are represented by Jan-Lennard Struff, Daniel Altmaier and Yannick Hanfmann.
Shapovalov won a hard-court title in Belgrade when last in action earlier this month so is looking rejuvenated, while Diallo was runner-up to Karen Khachanov in a stronger event in Almaty at the end of October, which highlights his future promise.
Canada has an excellent recent record in the Davis Cup - they won in 2022 and were runners-up in 2019 - and even if lining up against Spain in the semi-finals, they should have plenty of belief that they can claim the sizable scalp.
