Dan Evans vs Tommy Paul Tips, Predictions and Bet Builder

Tommy Paul will look to get his grass game in order ahead of Wimbledon when he takes on wildcard Dan Evans in the last 16 of the Eastbourne Open on Wednesday.

The American, who is the No.2 seed at the tournament, has not played competitively since losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open quarter-final 22 days ago.

And he has not stepped onto a grass court in tournament play since losing to the Spaniard at the same stage of last year’s Grand Slam at SW19.

Paul was affected by leg and abdominal injuries in Paris, the latter of which forced him to pull out of defending his Queen’s Club title earlier this month.

His fans will hope he is over the worst as he prepares to face British veteran Evans, who dug deep to beat world number 49 Miomir Kecmanovic in three sets on Monday.

Evans, who recently stunned Frances Tiafoe at Queen’s, holds a 2-1 head-to-head advantage over Paul from previous meetings.

Dan Evans vs Tommy Paul Prediction

Best Bet: Over 22.5 Total Games @ 5/6

Both players are known for their resilience and ability to dig deep, so we should expect another close and possibly lengthy contest.

Evans famously rallied from 0-4 down in the final set to beat 23rd seed Karen Khachanov in five hours and 35 minutes, making it the longest match in US Open history last summer.

Meanwhile, Paul beat Khachanov and Marton Fucsovics in back-to-back five-setters at the French Open last month.

Evans’ backhand slice and net instincts are well-suited to grass, while Paul’s athleticism and improved serve should translate well to the surface, despite his lack of recent turf time.

Given their history of tight battles and Evans’ home advantage, this could be another three-setter.

Simon Barlow says:

Evans’ experience and grass-court nous make him a tricky test for Paul, especially as the American adjusts to the surface after time out to heal. Expect a long, competitive match that will go beyond 22.5 total games - as all their previous meetings have.

At 35, Evans knows he is coming towards the end of his career and has spoken about the "stark reality" of not being able to compete at the same level he once did.

So it is telling that he is still ploughing on in the belief that he can compete with the best.

That’s exactly what he did when he upset world No. 13 Frances Tiafoe 7-5, 6-2 eight days ago for his first win at Queen's Club since 2021.

Evans is capable of rising to the occasion again and getting the better of Paul if he shows any signs of rust at the seaside venue.

But his second serve has been his Achilles heel recently as the Briton has coughed up far too many double faults.

Back Evans to win in another lengthy contest with at least three double faults in a Bet Builder for the last-16 matchup.

Evans still has enough juice to take down Paul, but his double-faulting remains an issue. The Briton has served at least three doubles in five of his last six matches on grass.

Simon Barlow adds.

Tactics and Form

Evans briefly dropped out of the world’s Top 200 earlier this year, but recent grass court victories have seen him move back up to a ranking of 170, still some way off his highest of 21.

The Briton relies on variety, slice, and net approaches. He thrives on grass and has momentum from his victory over Tiafoe at Queen’s.

Eastbourne second-seed Paul pulled out of Queen’s where he was the defending champion because of abdominal and adductor issues he felt at the French Open.

The athletic, aggressive baseliner is having a great year, however, after reaching the quarter-finals at the Australian and French Opens plus a semi-final run at Rome.
