Coco Gauff v Jodie Burrage: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Only Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek are a shorter price than Coco Gauff in the women's Australian Open outright betting and the American should stamp her authority against Britain's Jodie Burrage.

Gauff, despite still only being 20 years of age, is already a Grand Slam champion, having won the US Open in 2023, and she is considered a leading candidate for Melbourne glory.

The American arrived at Melbourne Park in terrific form, having helped the USA to United Cup glory, and she made light work of compatriot Sofia Kenin in the first round, easing to a 6-3 6-3 success.

Burrage deserves plenty of credit for her 6-2 6-4 victory over French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean in the opening round, especially considering that came just two months after considering quitting the sport.

The British number seven’s career has been beset by injuries and, after missing six months last season, she contemplated retirement before wrist surgery offered her a new sense of hope.

However, this is a steep rise in class to what Burrage is used to and the 25-year-old is bidding to make the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career.

Gauff, in stark contrast, has already made at least the quarter-final of a Grand Slam on seven occasions and it would be deemed a huge surprise was she to suffer a shock defeat.

Coco Gauff v Jodie Burrage betting tips and predictions

Jodie Burrage +7.5 games on the handicap - 5/6

Gauff is 1/50 to win and 1/7 to advance in straight sets, which is hardly a surprise given that she is one of the best female players on the planet.

The world number three should run out a convincing winner in straight sets, but it may be difficult for her to defy a handicap start of -7.5 games, which would mean she would have to prevail 6-2 6-2 or better.

Burrage may feel some pressure given the scenario she is faced with, but she served exceptionally well in her opening win over Jeanjean and she is unlikely to be completely disgraced.

These two have met previously on the grass of Eastbourne in 2023, with Gauff triumphing 6-1 6-1, but Burrage has progressed since then, with eight victories in her last 11 matches highlighting her improvement.

Gauff is likely to go deep in this tournament, so is unlikely to go all guns blazing given there are set to be tougher tests ahead.

The American has lost only four of her last 25 matches, which highlights the task Burrage is faced with, but wrist surgery has given her some renewed belief and she can put up a bold showing.

Coco Gauff to serve 5+ aces - 10/11

Gauff has worked extremely hard on her serve in recent seasons and that was evident in her 6-3 6-3 win over fellow American Kenin in round one, as she fired down 12 aces and was broken only once.

That means Gauff has served four or more aces in seven of her last eight matches and she should be able to find five more against Burrage, who doesn’t have much experience coming up against players of this magnitude.

Across Burrage’s last three matches, her opponents have compiled a total of 15 aces and, without disrespecting Jeanjean, Leylah Fernandez and Hailey Baptiste, neither possess a weapon as potent as Gauff’s serve.
