Britain’s Heather Watson has been contemplating calling time on her career for a while now and the Guernsey battler is 3/1 to pull off an unlikely first-round victory at Wimbledon against improving Clara Tauson.
It's been a good few seasons since Tauson was being hailed as the new wonderkid in women’s tennis and, while there was obviously plenty of promise being shown by the Dane, it has taken a lot longer than many expected for her to find her feet on the main tour.
But this season, following a first main-tour title in Auckland in early January, Tauson went on to finish runner-up to Mirra Andreeva in the Dubai 1000 series tournament, a placing which has to go down as the best of the Dane’s career.
And with Tauson and Watson heading in different directions in their careers, it’s difficult to see the Briton getting a result, even allowing for the fact that at her peak, she looked a viable outsider to lift the Venus Rosewater Bowl.

Tauson reached the final of the Dubai 1000 series tournament in February
Heather Watson reached the last 16 at Queen’s Club recently but that was an oasis in a season of struggle for the seasoned Briton
Watson has failed to get past the first round of Wimbledon in the last two editions
Best Bet: Clara Tauson -4.5 games @ 1/1
Watson managed to string together a few match wins at Queen’s Club recently, but while in her pomp she would have been marked down as a viable outsider for a match such as this, it’s difficult to advise the former British number one with her star fading fast.
Tauson, on the other hand, is a player very much on the rise and the Dane will have accrued much confidence from lifting her first piece of main-tour silverware in New Zealand in January and then embarking on a run to the Dubai final a month later.
Watson would have been nailed on to make a fight of this five years ago, but things change and it’s hard to envisage the match lasting for three sets right now.
Tauson has been nibbled at in the outright betting and while she’s unlikely to ditch her major maiden tag in the coming fortnight, she could enjoy a prosperous run in the grass-court Slam.
Adrian Humphries explains:
Not so long ago, Watson would have been a confident recommendation to ensure this encounter was closely fought, but things change and the Briton’s fine career appears to be waning dramatically.
Tauson to win 2-0
Tauson first service break
Tauson 5+ aces
Pays 21/20
Tauson looks a confident tip to win the match and given Watson’s travails on court this year, it’s difficult to imagine this clash making it to a third set, so perhaps the biggest stumbling-block could actually be Watson starting the match on the front foot.
The pair have played each other only once before in a match of note. That was on a Tenerife hard court in 2021, when Tauson edged the honours 6-4 2-6 7-6.
But a lot of water has passed under the bridge since that meeting, so much so that Tauson, 22, is the firm favourite to progress to the last 64 in south-west London - and such odds are difficult to disagree with.
Tauson, who has the second most aces on the WTA Tour this season and is averaging just shy of six per match, should also be able to slam down at least five against Watson.

Adrian Humphries adds:
Tauson’s camp will be instructing their charge to take her time in the early exchanges - they will know that the Dane’s form is way superior to Watson’s right now.

Watson’s tactics in her opener could well take the form of bluster, but that means the Briton may not spend long in the ascendancy against an opponent who ought to be expecting a victory.
The return to Wimbledon could boost Watson, but Tauson’s form is way superior to her opponent’s right now so the Dane’s camp are likely to assure their charge that if she takes her time on the grass, good things are likely to happen.
Watson found a way past Yulia Putintseva in the first round at Queen’s but that opponent has gone off the boil after a decent start to the season.
And after that, Watson unsurprisingly had no answer to 2022 Wimbledon heroine Elena Rybakina in Baron’s Court.
