British players in the 2025 Australian Open

With the 2025 Australian Open is just around the corner, what are the chances of Britain producing a winner of this event for the first time since 1972?

Virginia Wade's triumph 53 years ago remains the last time a British player won Down Under, while Fred Perry's victory back in 1934 was the most recent glory for a male Briton.

Jack Draper

For so long Andy Murray carried the flag for British hopes in the Grand Slams and he came agonisingly close to lifting this trophy, having lost in the final no less than five times.

With the Scot now retired, Britain are looking for a new hero to follow and that appears to have come in the shape of Jack Draper, who enjoyed a stellar 2024 that produced victories at the Stuttgart Open and Vienna Open.

In the middle of those wins was a run to the semi-finals of the US Open, the 23-year-old falling to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in three sets.

Draper is ranked 15th in the world and will be seeded for the Australian Open, which should make things easier in the earlier rounds, but there are still doubts surrounding his fitness.

The Sutton-born star missed the United Cup team event in Sydney because of a hip injury and while he was practising in Melbourne ahead of the slam, this will be his first competitive action since the Paris Masters in October.

Cameron Norrie

Before Draper came onto the scene, Cameron Norrie was the player that had seemingly picked up the baton from Murray and he enjoyed a brilliant run to the semi-finals of Wimbledon in 2022.

However, the 29-year-old has been unable to replicate that type of performance in the Grand Slams since and he has never gone past the fourth round of the Australian Open.

Norrie recently reached the quarter-finals of the Hong Kong Open, only to be knocked out by veteran Kei Nishikori, and he faces a tough ask to go all the way Down Under given the fact he also won't be seeded.

Katie Boulter

Britain's highest-ranked female player Katie Boulter enjoyed a positive 2024, winning two WTA Tour titles at the San Diego Open and Nottingham Open and also losing in the final of the Hong Kong Open.

The 28-year-old will be hoping to start off the new year strongly but there are question marks over ability when it comes to the Grand Slams, with runs to the third round at Wimbledon (2022 and 2023) and the US Open (2023) her best results.

Boulter recently lost to Iga Swiatek at the United Cup in a three-set epic, going down 6-7 6-1 6-4, and that again highlighted the difference between the Brit and the leading stars in the game.

Emma Raducanu

It has been a frustrating time for Emma Raducanu ever since she burst onto the scene with her 2021 US Open victory, with a catalogue of injuries hampering her progress and development.

In a bid to arrest the fitness woes, the 22-year-old hired highly rated fitness coach Yutaka Nakamura in December last year and she has been working hard to get into peak physical shape for Australia.

However, Raducanu's injury nightmare shows no signs of letting up as she was forced to pull out of a WTA event in Auckland because of a back problem.

How fit the British ace will be is anybody's guess and until there is confidence in the physical side of her game, it is hard to think she will enjoy a deep run without encountering any issues.

Sonay Kartal

A rising British player in the women's game is Sonay Kartal, who landed her maiden WTA Tour title in September 2024 at the Jasmin Open.

The 23-year-old will be making her main draw debut at Melbourne Park although she will be unseeded, so it will take a big effort for her to win the Australian Open.

Jodie Burrage

Another player set to make her main draw debut is Jodie Burrage, who has been making solid improvements over the last couple of years and will be hoping to gain plenty of experience from this trip Down Under.

The 25-year-old reached her first WTA Tour final last year, losing out to Boulter at the Nottingham Open, and this will be her first slam appearance outside of Wimbledon.
