Andy Murray v Andrey Rublev: Tips, Predictions & Odds

There should be some added spice for the second round match between Andrey Rublev and Andy Murray at the ATP Indian Wells Open after the Scottish star criticised players who don't show enough respect to match officials this week.

Rublev might easily take that as a barb aimed at him given that he was disqualified from his last tournament in Dubai for screaming at a line judge in his semi-final against Alexander Bublik.

Regardless of the storylines, it's a fascinating match-up on the court between former world number one Murray and current world number five Rublev.

Andy Murray v Andrey Rublev betting tips and predictions

Rublev to win 2-0 - 4/6

Indian Wells would not be anywhere near the top of a list of Andy Murray's favourite tournaments, as it is one of only two Masters events (along with Monte Carlo) that he has never won during his illustrious career.

The 36-year-old has had a tough start to 2024, but he is coming off his most promising display of the year, having dispatched Belgian qualifier David Goffin 6-3 6-2 in the first round.

Murray has fallen to 61st in the world rankings and has not won back-to-back matches since last September, though, so it's no surprise to see Rublev made a strong favourite for their showdown in California on Friday.

Rublev is 1/5 to progress to the last 32 by winning his first match of the tournament, as the fifth seed received a bye into this round.

While he can expect an early test from the 2012 US Open champion, Rublev should be able to record a straight-sets victory over the veteran, who has suggested he may be heading into at least semi-retirement later this year.

Murray had won just two of his eight contests in 2024 before his success against Goffin - against Alexandre Muller in Doha and Denis Shapovalov in Dubai - and beating one of the world's current top five should prove beyond him.

Rublev and over 20.5 games - 6/5

While Murray is expected to bow out of the tournament in this round, he is unlikely to go down without a fight and a battling defeat for the British star looks a likely outcome.

While Murray has a poor record at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, having never won there despite this being his 16th visit to the Californian venue, he enjoyed the conditions for his match against Goffin and should be looking ahead to this test.

Murray said he served better than he ever had at Indian Wells as this year the courts are playing faster, which suits his game.

That could prevent this from being a quick match for Rublev and taking the Russian to win a match that runs to 21 games or more could pay.

There is not much to be learned from the pair's previous meetings as Rublev was just breaking through when he lost 6-3 6-0 6-2 to Murray as a qualifier in the 2017 Australian Open.

Meanwhile, Murray was suffering a period of injuries around the time of his 7-5 6-2 defeat by Rublev in Rotterdam in 2021.

Those were both one-sided contests, but this one could turn into slightly more of a tussle, even if Rublev comes out on top in both sets.

Rublev to win first set 7-6 - 13/2

For a bigger potential payout, taking Rublev to win the first set in a tie-break offers decent value at 13/2.

It's worth remembering that this is Rublev's opening match, while Murray has already experienced the conditions on the courts and the Russian may need a little time to settle down.

Rublev played a tie-break in the second set of his opening match in Hong Kong against Britain's Liam Broady and also made a relatively slow start at the Australian Open, winning his first set against Brazil's Thiago Seyboth Wild 7-5 before progressing via a fifth-set tie-break.

In Rotterdam he won his first set 7-5 against Zizou Bergs and, while he beat Richard Gasquet 6-3 6-4 in his Doha opener, he began his ill-fated Dubai challenge with a first-set tie-break reverse to China's Zhizhen Zhang, before taking the next two sets 6-2 6-4.

If Murray can serve as well as he did in his first match, a first-set tiebreak win for Rublev appears to be a realistic outcome.
