Carlos Alcaraz is a heavy favourite to add to his fantastic run of 21 match victories by defeating Andrey Rublev in the last 16 of Wimbledon on Sunday.
While the Spaniard should prevail, he is looking a little jaded after such a long and successful stint on clay and grass and it would not be a huge surprise if the 14th seed was to pose problems for the reigning champion.
Rublev has been busy bemoaning his own form in the first week of the year’s third Grand Slam tournament, but he has actually been playing some decent tennis.
Aged 27, he is still improving and there could be brighter skies around the corner for a player who lifted the Doha hard-court trophy in February.

There’s no getting away from the fact that Carlos Alcaraz is looking just about as lacklustre on court as Jannik Sinner is looking fresh, but it’s far too early to make accurate predictions regarding how the second week of the Championships will play out.
Alcaraz has dropped sets against Fabio Fognini (two) and Jan-Lennard Struff, posting his only straight-sets win against British amateur Oliver Tarvet.
So this looks a big opportunity for Rublev to at least pose problems for the world number two and second seed, even if he cannot actually find a way to defeat the brilliant Murcian.
Rublev was complaining about plenty after losing the opening set of his second-round encounter with Lloyd Harris, but the South African was a seriously useful player a few years ago and the 14th seed did well to turn that match on its head and triumph in four sets.
Rublev won the only match he and Alcaraz have contested outdoors in their career - in Madrid last year, with the Spaniard winning both indoor meetings in straight sets - and even though the favourite is bidding to make it a hat-trick of Wimbledon titles this summer, it’s possible that Rublev’s game is better suited to the demands of grass than many might believe.
Alcaraz could easily turn up on Sunday looking great after a good night’s sleep, but it feels as if his clash with Rublev is more likely to be closely contested than not.
And so having dropped sets against soon-to-be-retired veteran Fognini and long-time underachiever Struff, Rublev could win at least one set against his ultra-busy opponent.
Adrian Humphries explains:
Alcaraz has already been taken beyond three sets in two of his three matches against unseeded players, while Rublev also has some confidence from beating the Spaniard last year.
Rublev winning a set would almost certainly go a long way towards the match yielding a higher total-games make-up, although these things are never cast-iron.
But with the combined factors of five-time major singles champion Alcaraz not being at his brilliant best and Rublev arguably playing better than it appears on the face of it, the outsider would appear to have a definite chance of making his mark in the last match to be played on Centre Court on Sunday.

Adrian Humphries adds:
The main factors to take into consideration are possible fatigue on Alcaraz’s part and that Rublev is actually in good form.

Rublev will probably walk on to the Centre Court with his head bowed, but take no notice of his histrionics because the 14th seed is playing pretty well.
In a way, Rublev may even be making up ground on Alcaraz, so there is definitely an opportunity for the outsider to take the game to the champion in the last 16.
