Carlos Alcaraz looks well placed to frank favouritism in his French Open final clash with Alexander Zverev in Paris on Sunday afternoon and the Spanish 21-year-old could triumph in style.
Alcaraz could join a long list of Spanish players - Rafael Nadal, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Carlos Moya and Albert Costa are recent examples - who have won the French Open.
Alcaraz is the reigning Wimbledon champion and won his first Grand Slam singles in the 2022 US Open, but victory in the French Open final would give him his first clay-court crown.
Alcaraz booked his place in the final with a 2-6 6-3 3-6 6-4 6-3 victory over Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals, while Zverev reached his first Paris clay final with a 2-6 6-2 6-4 6-2 defeat of Casper Ruud, who was suffering from a stomach bug for much of the match.
Alexander Zverev not to win two sets - 8/11
Zverev is playing at or near the peak of his powers but that may count for little when he meets Alcaraz on the Court Philippe Chatrier clay on Sunday.
Alcaraz was the pre-tournament favourite for the French Open this year and the Spanish ace has justified the oddsmakers’ faith in him by reaching his first Paris clay final.
Zverev was fourth in the ante-post betting, also behind 2023 French Open hero Novak Djokovic and Australian Open champion Sinner, after lifting the Rome Masters trophy for the second time.
But the confidence Alcaraz should have gained from fighting back from two sets to one down against Sinner in the Paris semi-finals could mean he is nigh on unstoppable against his German opponent.
The taller Zverev will hope his greater power and experience as a professional - he is 27 years old so it’s no surprising he’s been peaking of late - counts for something against Alcaraz.
However, the consistently impressive statistics that Alcaraz has been producing - his first-serve win percentage figures were pretty much the same in his five-set defeat of Sinner (74) as in his straight-set dismissals of Stefanos Tsitsipas (74) and Felix Auger-Aliassime (75) - looks ominous for Zverev’s hopes of ditching his Grand Slam singles maiden tag.
And while Zverev has seen off Rafael Nadal, David Goffin, Tallon Griekspoor, Holger Rune, Alex de Minaur and Casper Ruud in Paris - Ruud was suffering the ill effects of a stomach complaint too - the form of Alcaraz’s last four wins over Sebastian Korda, Auger-Aliassime, Tsitsipas and Sinner reads better.
Zverev will do well to win one set against Alcaraz, let alone two, so 8/11 about the favourite winning without the need of a deciding set looks value.
Set betting: Carlos Alcaraz to win 3-0 - 2/1
Punters could also back Alcaraz to successfully concede a 1.5-game start to Zverev in their opening set - the Murcian would need to win the first of a possible five sets by a two-game margin - but preference for a second bet is for the favourite to triumph in straight sets.
Alcaraz has needed only three sets to win four of his six French Open matches this year. And while only one fellow top player - Sinner - won at least a set against the Juan Carlos Ferrero-coached All England Club champion, Zverev will do well to win one set against Alcaraz, let alone repeat the Italian’s feat of taking him the distance.
A price of 2/1 about a fifth Alcaraz straight-sets victory in the past fortnight is not exactly a giveaway for punters, but it’s one that could oblige nevertheless.
