Alexander Zverev v Jaume Munar: Prediction, Tips and Odds

One-way traffic is expected when Germany's Alexander Zverev locks horns with Spain's Jaume Munar in the first round of the men's singles tennis at this summer's Olympics.

Third seed Zverev claimed gold in Tokyo in 2021 and he continues to go from strength to strength on clay, which is the surface for this year's event.

As for Munar, he heads into the Olympics in underwhelming form, having lost his opening matches at each of the Hamburg European Open and the Austrian Open in Kitzbuhel.

Zverev is the 1/12 favourite to win this match and progress to the second round, while Munar is an outsider at 7/1.

The winner of Sunday's contest will take on either Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic or China's Zhizhen Zhang in the second round in Paris.

Alexander Zverev -5.5 games on match handicap - 10/11

Value is hard to come by in this contest, with Zverev just 4/11 to win the match in straight sets but there is still a way to back the German and get a run for your money.

At 10/11, the German is worth a bet at -5.5 games on the match handicap.

Not only did Zverev win gold at the last Olympics but he is also an ace on clay.

He reached the final of the French Open at this exact venue earlier this season, taking winner Carlos Alcaraz to five sets.

He also reached the semi-finals of the French Open in 2021, 2022 and 2023 and he warmed up for the men's singles at this year's Olympics by finishing runner-up to Arthur Fils at the Hamburg European Open on clay earlier this month.

Zverev thrives on the slower surface and he will be determined to win back-to-back gold medals, so do not expect any slip in standards from the German powerhouse.

The French Open is a good gauge of how players will perform here given it is at the same venue and prior to his final loss to Alcaraz, Zverev had won at least six games more than his opponent in four of his six matches at the clay-court Grand Slam.

And given the poor form of Munar, who was beaten 7-5 6-1 6-4 in the second round of the French Open earlier this year, a similar margin of victory is expected from Zverev this time around.

Jaume Munar under 7.5 games won - 5/6

Thinking along similar lines to the first wager, Munar could be worth backing to win seven games or fewer in this clash with Zverev at 5/6.

The second round is as far as the Spaniard has ever gone at the French Open or indeed any Grand Slam event.

This season on the ATP tour, he has lost 17 of his 29 matches and it is hard to see him even slightly troubling the in-form Zverev in this Olympics tussle.

A straight-sets demolition looks likely but is far too short, however this is another way to back a Munar capitulation.

If the match does feature just the two sets, even Munar winning three games in each will see him fall short of the seven-games mark and an underwhelming exit could be on the cards for the Spaniard in Paris.
