After claiming his first Olympic gold medal in the 400m individual medley with a Games record time, Leon Marchand is now targeting success in three more individual events in Paris.
Marchand dominated the 400m individual medley before a partisan home crowd at the La Defense Arena, breaking Michael Phelps' Olympic record as he secured gold by a margin of 5.67 seconds over Japan's Tomoyuki Matsushita in second.
The 22-year-old, coached by Phelps' former mentor Bob Bowman, was just outside the world record time he'd set at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships.
Given Monday to rest and recuperate, Marchand was in the thick of the action on Tuesday as he looked to qualify for the final of the 200m butterfly and 200m breaststroke.
He competed in the prelims for both events during the morning session before the French phenom eased to victory in his breaststroke semi-final heat. Even if he was conserving his energy for the butterfly semi-final to follow, you wouldn't have noticed as he clocked the fastest time across both semi-finals.
Marchand's fourth race of the day saw him finish first in his 200m butterfly semi-final heat, though the Frenchman's 1:53:50 was almost a second slower than the fastest time of the session from world record holder Kristof Milak of Hungary.
Off the back of a gruelling day, Marchand will compete on Wednesday with medals on the line as he eyes glory in the 200m butterfly (19:37 start time) and 200m breaststroke (21:31 start time), heading into both events as the world champion.
Favourite to triumph in the breaststroke, it's going to require a substantial effort from Marchand to stave off the threat of Milak in the fly, though the support of a raucous crowd could spur him to success.
His Olympic campaign doesn't end on Wednesday, either.
Marchand is odds-on favourite in the 200m individual medley, of which he holds the European record. The heats and semi-finals are scheduled to take place on Thursday before the final on Friday.
