Sunday's Sport: 2023 starts with bumper day of sport

It’s New Year’s Day and there is whole host of top-class sport to follow as 2023 starts with a bang.

From Premier League football, darts, rugby union and horse racing there is something for everyone on the first day of a brand new year.

Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa will be looking to hit the ground running in 2023 when they clash in north London on Sunday.

Villa suffered a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in their last outing, while Spurs were forced to come from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Brentford.

There have been 21 goals scored in the last six Premier League meetings between Villa and Spurs and with that in mind, over 2.5 goals in Sunday’s encounter is available at 4/6.

In the other Premier League game on New Year’s Day, Chelsea make the trip to the East Midlands to face Nottingham Forest.

The Blues are facing a battle to finish in the top four this season and can’t afford to fall further behind their rivals.

Chelsea are 13/20 to pick up a win against a Forest side who have only won three of their 16 games in the Premier League so far this term.

Michael Smith takes on Stephen Bunting, while Gerwyn Price and Gabriel Clemens also go head to head. The action concludes with the final clash at 21:15, as 1/7 Michael van Gerwen goes toe to toe with Chris Dobey.

Premiership Rugby: Fireworks expected at the Gardens

Where: Franklin’s Gardens, Northampton
When: 15:00, Sunday 1st January 2023
How to watch: BT Sport 1
Odds: Northampton 4/7, Harlequins 11/8

There’s one match from the Gallagher Premiership to look forward to and it should be a high-scoring encounter as Northampton Saints welcome Harlequins to Franklin’s Gardens.

Saints will be determined to turn their fortunes around after a tough spell that saw them lose three games on the bounce in all competitions.

Meanwhile, Quins will be reeling from their defeat on a wet and windy afternoon to Bristol Bears last time out.

This encounter is bound to have plenty of tries, with the result potentially still in the balance come the last ten minutes.

Horse Racing: An abundance of racing to get stuck into

There are no less than eight meetings to look forward to across the UK and Ireland on Sunday, with racing from Tramore, Cheltenham, Fairyhouse, Exeter, Musselburgh, Fakenham, Catterick and Southwell.

Racing gets under way with the opener at Tramore at 11.55 and concludes with the final race on the all-weather at Southwell at 5.56.

It’s a new year, but nothing has changed with our coverage and all of today’s meetings will be available via our Sports Live Streaming service.
