PLAYERS Championship

Setting the scene…

There is a $25m prize fund at THE PLAYERS these days, with $4.5m going to the champion, and the PGA Tour's finest have assembled at TPC Sawgrass.

The Stadium Course at Sawgrass has hosted THE PLAYERS since 1982. The tournament used to be staged in May, but switched to March in 2019, providing lusher terrain. The 2020 event was abandoned after just one round.

A field of 144 is going to post this week, with the top 65 and ties qualifying for round three. Sunny and relatively calm weather is forecast, with the wind set to peak on Sunday.

Max Homa each-way @ 22/1

Californian ace Max Homa found his A-game at Bay Hill last week and the six-time PGA Tour champion seems dangerous for THE PLAYERS.

Homa endured disappointment on the West Coast Swing, but he finished strongly for 16th place in the Genesis Invitational, then followed up with eighth spot in the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The 2022 PLAYERS showed how comfortable Homa is at TPC Sawgrass. From the wrong side of a huge draw bias, he finished 13th, battling through the bad weather before closing with a round of 66.

Homa returned last year and enjoyed an eight-under-par weekend on his way to sixth place, so everything points to this magnificent iron-player being a title contender in the Sunshine State this week.

Scottie Scheffler each-way @ 11/2

The most likely Sawgrass champion is arguably the man who lifted the silverware at Bay Hill last Sunday - Scottie Scheffler.

The Texas-based colossus romped to a five-shot win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational - the same margin of victory he managed when winning THE PLAYERS 12 months ago.

The Sawgrass success was remarkable, considering Scheffler finished the week 48th in the putting statistics. Even with a humdrum putting week, he cruised to the title.

Given how well Scheffler putted at Bay Hill, there is every reason to expect an improved performance on the Sawgrass dancefloors.

A switch to a mallet-headed putter has galvanised Scheffler on the greens. He topped the Bay Hill putting statistics on Sunday and looks an extremely strong PLAYERS favourite.

Min Woo Lee each-way @ 50/1

Rising star Min Woo Lee played in the final two-ball of the last PLAYERS Championship, gaining valuable experience of contending down the stretch at Sawgrass.

Lee eventually finished sixth, but 12 months later is better equipped to take any chance that comes his way. That incredible Sawgrass debut showed his liking for tough Florida layouts and he was runner-up in the Sunshine State in this year's Cognizant Classic.

The 25-year-old looks set for a glorious career and it is probably only a matter of time before he makes his PGA Tour breakthrough. Sawgrass would be a spectacular venue at which to shed his maiden tag, but he is clearly good enough, representing excellent each-way value.

Si Woo Kim top-20 finish @ 21/10

Punters happy to take shorter prices should consider the 21/10 about Si Woo Kim finishing the week in the top 20.

Kim has a superb record at Sawgrass and has been producing consistently solid golf this year. With a half-decent week of putting, the South Korean will expect to feature on the PLAYERS leaderboard.

Kim was PLAYERS champion in 2017, taking the title at the tender age of 21. He is still the youngest PLAYERS winner in history. This week, aged 28, Kim has returned to Sawgrass and is swinging well.

Si Woo has posted a top-50 finish in every event he has teed up in this year, with four top-25s, including 14th place at Pebble Beach and 12th in the Phoenix Open.

He was 23rd on his Sawgrass debut in 2016, ninth in 2021, and it is worth noting that in the abandoned 2020 event, he had opened with a 65, so was in second place before the cancellation. Kim relishes the Sawgrass assignment.
