State Man Horse - Age, weight, trainer, owner, race record and form

Racing fans were denied a salivating rematch between Constitution Hill and State Man, the two leading two-mile hurdlers on either side of the Irish Sea, at this year's Cheltenham Festival after the former missed the Cotswold extravaganza.

In the 2023 winner's absence, State Man carried all before him to etch his name on the long and illustrious Champion Hurdle roll of honour with an authoritative performance at Prestbury Park.

In doing so State Man chalked up a ninth Grade 1 success of his career, and all eyes will now be on Punchestown at the end of April to see if Constitution Hill is able to take on the new champion in his own backyard.

State Man Owner

State Man is owned by Joe and Marie Donnelly, with the latter being the name shown on his record (as Mrs J Donnelly).

State Man Trainer

State Man is trained by 17-time Irish National Hunt champion trainer Willie Mullins at his Closutton stables.

Mullins began training back in 1988 and has gone on to become one of the all-time greatest and most-respected figures in his field.

Few trainers can match the achievements of the 67-year-old, who became the first trainer to saddle 100 winners at the Cheltenham Festival when his son, Patrick, rode Jasmin De Vaux to victory in the 2024 Champion Bumper.

Mullins now stands on 103 winners at jump racing's biggest meeting following a treble on the final day of the 2024 festival, which included a second successive win in the Gold Cup for his superb stayer Galopin Des Champs.

State Man Age

State Man is seven years old having made his debut in France as a three-year-old in 2020.

State Man Official Rating

State Man was allotted a hurdles rating of 169 by the BHA handicap following his success in the 2024 Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham.

He has risen from a mark of 141 when winning the County Hurdle at the meeting in 2022 on just his third start for Willie Mullins.

State Man Next Race

State Man's next race is likely to be the Punchestown Champion Hurdle, a race he won by three lengths last season.

The Joe and Marie Donnelly-owned gelding has won at the Punchestown festival in each of the last two campaigns having also won the Grade 1 Champion Novice Hurdle at the track in 2022.

State Man Record

Victory in the 2024 Champion Hurdle was State Man's 11th win from 14 runs under rules.

After finishing second to Busselton in the Prix Wild Monarch, a Listed three-year-old hurdle at Auteuil in France, for Daniela Mele, State Man fell on his Irish debut in December 2021.

But since then he has been almost faultless, winning all but one of his subsequent 12 races for Mullins, the exception being his defeat to Constitution Hill in the 2023 Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

State Man has proved himself far and away the best two-mile hurdler in Ireland, winning eight Grade 1 races there and almost all in dominant fashion.

His Champion Hurdle win is the only one of his nine Grade 1 victories to have come in England.

State Man Prize Money

With such a glittering CV already, it is no surprise that State Man has been extremely lucrative for his connections.

His Champion Hurdle victory took the seven-year-old gelding's earnings past the £1 million mark to £1,118,509 of which 91% has been in race winnings.

State Man News

Following another thoroughly professional performance in the 2024 Champion Hurdle, many racing fans have pondered whether State Man would have won the race had Constitution Hill been fit enough to defend the crown he won in effortless style 12 months earlier.

In response, State Man's trainer, Willie Mullins, told reporters: "He turns up and if you don't turn up, you can't win.

"He does what it says on the tin, he's that sort of a horse. There isn't a wow factor, but he is a very solid, sound horse and he just gives his run every day."

All roads lead back to Cheltenham in a year's time but the current champ can be backed at 4/1 to retain his title with Constitution Hill, seen just once this season, a 7/4 chance.

And the pretenders to State Man's crown do not stop there. Stablemate Lossiemouth, an emphatic winner of the Mares' Hurdle at this year's Cheltenham Festival, is a 5/1 chance and Ballyburn, another of Mullins' jewels, is 10/1.
