Southampton 12/1 to break Derby County's points record

Southampton are 12/1 to break Derby County’s record low total of 11 points in a Premier League season.

The Saints parted ways with Russell Martin after their 5-0 drubbing at home to Tottenham in December, with the side looking doomed to relegation long before that.

Southampton did briefly stop the rot with a 0-0 draw against Fulham with Simon Rusk in charge as caretaker, but the arrival of Ivan Juric has done them no favours with the Saints returning to their porous ways.

The parallels between Southampton and Derby are all too concerning for Saints fans; after 20 games of the 2007/08 season, Derby had one win and seven points, scoring 10 goals and conceding 45; at the same stage Southampton had one win and six points, scoring 12 goals and conceding 44.

The January transfer window will give some indication into Southampton’s intentions, but any activity will surely be aimed at launching a promotion bid from the Championship next term rather than attempting to pull off the greatest of great escapes.
