Australian Racing: Soft track great for Tavirun

Sunday sees seven meetings taking place including metro action from Hobart where the going is currently a soft 5 and provincial fixtures at Sunshine Coast Poly and Kalgoorlie.

Tavirun to complete double

The seventh race on the Hobart card, is a competitive looking Benchmark 76 contest over 2100m. Coming into this contest on the back of three consecutive wins including by half-a-length in a Benchmark 62 contest over 1600m here last month Yarra Master looks sure to have his supporters.

Stepping up in distance Scott Brunton’s charge has jockey David Pires back in the saddle having missed that latest victory but with unproven stamina preference here is for top weight Tavirun.

Claiming rider Lizzie Annells was engaged for the first time when the pair recorded a comfortable triumph in a 1600m contest at this level on a soft 5 track here last month. Had previously delivered a solid third place finish in a 1400m handicap on soft going here in May and while the six-year-old has been kept to shorter distances in the main this spell he is proven over further having placed second in a 2500m contest at this level at Moonee Valley last July.

Sigrid Carr’s mare is a versatile sort tactics wise but notably hasn’t been asked to race from the front since fading badly in finishing last over 2200m here in January. The soft track forecast is in Tavirun’s favour and he is taken to deliver an eighth career success.

Super can return with victory

On the polytrack at Sunshine Coast Sip It Slow completed a double when winning over 1000m in a Benchmark 58 contest on a heavy 8 turf course here at the start of last month. Failed to complete a hat-trick when a length fourth over 1100m at Gatton subsequently but rates a big threat to our selection Superare in this contest.

Trained by Stuart Kendrick hasn’t been seen in race action since delivering a narrow margin victory in a 1000m Class 4 event on a soft 5 track here in June last year. That marked the gelding’s second victory of that spell having triumphed over 900m at Gold Coast on a heavy 8 track two starters earlier.

Demonstrated his well-being with a trial victory on a track rated good here on 28th June. Had his jockey here Tiffani Brooker on that occasion and with Syd’s Footprints, Archer’s Paradise and Wudang Blade all likely to want to go forward from the outset the son of Exceed And Excel is taken to pounce late to register a victory on his synthetics debut.

Eleven to triumph on debut

In Kalgoorlie’s opener, an eight runner maiden event over 1200m a number of these bring fair placed form into the race including Hole In One who was placed second on his first two starts and returns from a spell and American Sioux who has placed on both of her starts this spell.

Jockey Natasha Faithfull does well at this venue and comes into this event with a 19% strike-rate (15/79) here in the last year. She gets the leg up on Super Easy colt Prawns Eleven who gets weight from all bar fellow two-year-old Edward’s Choice in this contest.

Trained by Brock Lewthwaite the pick delivered a solid second place finish in a trial at Lark Hill last November. Had only the more experienced Street Parade, a debut winner five days later and subsequently Listed placed too good that day and is selected to deliver a winning effort on debut.
