World Grand Prix betting tips and predictions

Neil Roberton to win - 10/1

Hong Kong will host a snooker ranking event for the first time in 36 years as the World Grand Prix takes place at the Kai Tak Arena in Kowloon.

The world’s best 32 players on the one-year ranking list will be in action in the event, which carries a £700,000 total prize pool, with a winners share of £180,000.

Ronnie O’Sullivan has declined the invitation to play in the latest ranking event on the snooker tour and the Rocket will not appear again in competitive action before April’s World Championship.

Back to matters at hand, and Neil Robertson looks a good bet to take down the World Grand Prix prize.

The Thunder from Down Under had a season of struggles last term, but there have been promising signs this time around.

The Aussie won the English Open in September and reached the semi-finals of the Champion of Champion in November. There have been three further ranking event quarter-finals in the current campaign, and while Robertson isn’t winning events at the regularity that was once expected of him, it’s clear that the former world champion remains a major threat when at his peak.

Robertson takes on Yuan Sijun in the first-round of the World Grand Prix and the Thunder from Down under is 4/9 to win his opening Hong Kong tie.

The 43-year-old would again be a strong favourite should he meet either Chris Wakelin or Dave Gilbert in round two and Xiao Guodong is the highest ranked potential quarter-final opponent he could face.

There is no doubt that Robertson is housed in the weakest quarter of the Hong Kong draw and that should allow him to make smooth progress to the semi-finals.

Market leaders Judd Trump, Mark Selby and Kyren Wilson all look to have tricky paths to the latter stages of the competition and Robertson looks a bet to eclipse his rivals.

The Thunder from Down under can be backed each-way at 10/1 and that looks to offer some real value.

Elliot Slessor to win - 40/1

Elliot Slessor is housed in the same quarter of the draw as Neil Roberton, but at a much bigger price, it could pay to have a cover shot on the Gateshead cueman.

The 30-year-old is a four-time ranking event semi-finalist and is a progressive and talented performer.

Slessor has improved his ranking in each of the last six seasons and the north east potter arrives in Hong Kong as number 19 on the one-year list.

Of course, Slessor has yet to win a ranking event, and winning the World Grand Prix won’t come easily, but progressing from a mini section containing Lei Peifan, Jak Jones and Xiao Guodong certainly looks achievable.

At 40/1, there is enough in the price to chance a big run from a progressive performer.

Slessor could take on Neil Robertson in the quarter-finals, but a bet on both cuemen would guarantee a semi-final representation and that looks the way to play the Hong Kong event.
