The Shoot Out is a short-format tournament on the World Snooker Tour calendar with varied rules and practices in comparison with the standard sport.
It was initially a non-ranking event from 2011 to 2016 before it became ranked in 2017, which it remains.
There was a previous incarnation that ran one year in 1990, although that final - won by Welshman Darren Morgan - was the best of three frames instead.
The tournament takes inspiration from the popular BBC programme Pot Black, which helped bring snooker to the masses.
For the 2022/23 snooker season, the Shoot Out will take place between Wednesday 25th January to Saturday 28th January.
The Morningside Arena in Leicester will host the tournament for a second year after debuting in 2022.
Previous venues have included the Circus Arena in Blackpool, Reading's Hexagon Theatre, the Watford Colosseum, and the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes.
128 players enter the tournament with the short format allowing more players to compete.
A random draw is conducted prior to the first round and every match is played over one frame.
The aim of the Shoot Out is to create a faster-paced tournament.
Each frame can only last up to ten minutes.
There is a shot clock in the first five minutes of each frame set at 15 seconds, which reduces to ten in the second half of frames.
If a player exceeds their time limit, they are penalised five points or the value of the ball they are "on", whichever is higher (a player on the pink would be penalised six points for example).
Each shot has to see a ball potted or a cushion hit - failure to do so leads to another five-point penalty.
All fouls result in a ball in hand, meaning the cue ball can be placed anywhere on the table.
To decide who breaks off, the players "lag", meaning a ball is struck from the baulk line to the bottom cushion and back up to the top of the table.
Whoever is closest to the top cushion gets to break. In the event of a tied frame, a blue-ball shoot out occurs with players simply having to pot the blue directly.
Crowd interaction is also different.
Whereas normally spectators have to be silent during regular matches, fans can be more vocal, within reason, akin to the crowds at darts.

The shortness of the format means the tournament is more unpredictable, with 12 winners in 12 stagings.
The first winner in 2011 was Nigel Bond, who defeated Robert Milkins, while last year saw Iranian star Hossein Vafaei win his first ranking event after beating Mark Williams.
Big names in the sport such as Ronnie O'Sullivan, Mark Selby, and Judd Trump are yet to win the event.
Martin Gould is the only player to hit a century in the final when he beat Mark Allen 104-0 back in 2013.
In 2022, Vafaei scooped £50,000 for winning the tournament with Williams receiving a cheque worth £20,000.
The highest break prize is £5,000 while every player gets paid - £250 went to the first-round losers last year, though that money did not count towards their official ranking.
The Shoot Out is live streamed at bet365 and broadcast on Eurosport.
