The quick-fire extravaganza of the Snooker Shoot Out returns to Leicester's Mattioli Arena and Racing Post's Henry Hardwicke has a trio of outright selections for the one-frame showdown.
Daniel Wells @ 50/1
Daniel Wells is a three-time ranking event semi-finalist and the Welshman looks ready to go a step further and land his first major title at the Snooker Shoot Out.
The Neath potter reached the last four of the Xi'an Grand Prix in August and that performance suggests that the 36-year-old could be a serious contender in Leicester.
Defending champion Mark Allen, Neil Robertson, Mark Selby and Shaun Murphy head the betting and that is certainly a classy quartet. However, there have been 14 different winners of the one-frame competition and that gives clear indication that it can pay to look further down the betting.
Allen, Nigel Bond, Barry Hawkins, Martin Gould, Dominic Dale, Michael White, Robin Hull, Anthony McGill, Michael Georgiou, Thepchaiya Un-Nooh, Michael Holt, Ryan Day, Hossein Vafaei and Chris Wakelin are the previous Shoot Out champions and Bond, Gould, Hull, Georgiou and White aren’t even competing on the main tour anymore.
Wells is a former Snooker Shoot Out semi-finalist, the Welshman has twice topped a Championship League group and that suggests that the 36-year-old will not be unconvinced by the one-frame format.
The Neath cueman gets his Leicester campaign underway against Vladislav Gradinari, who was last seen losing 6-0 in the UK Championship qualifiers and that should allow a comfortable passage into round two.
Clearly, the random draw element of the Shoot Out will require some good fortune as the tournament progresses, but Wells looks capable of granting the wishes of his backers.
Joe O'Connor @ 50/1
Joe O'Connor reached the final of the short-format Championship League in March and that effort suggests the Leicester cueman can put on a show in the Shoot Out.
The 29-year-old is a ranking event finalist and a seriously talented performer and, at 50/1, the local potter looks overpriced to go one better on home turf.
O'Connor is active on the Ultimate Pool scene, which will bring plenty of familiarity with the shot clock and that’s no bad thing under the time pressure of the Shoot Out.
The 29-year-old gets his tilt at the Shoot Out title underway against Sanderson Lam and that certainly looks a winnable tie.
The Panda has won only six of the 16 matches he has contested this term and that should allow O’Connor to reach round two.
Jackson Page @ 40/1
Jackson Page enjoyed his best ranking event run when reaching the final of the Championship League in July and that was followed by a last-eight run in the top-level International Championship.
Action is a rising cueman, who is up to a career high ranking of 37 and the Ebbw Vale potter is inside the world’s top eight in terms of the lowest average shot time.
That should be to Page’s benefit under the shot clock pressure at the Shoot Out and the Welshman could be on the path to Shoot Out glory.
