Mark Williams v Tom Ford: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Mark Williams will go in search of another professional title when he takes on Tom Ford in the quarter-finals of the Tour Championship on Monday.

The Tour Championship consists of the top 12 ranked players on the one-year money list, and Williams is seeded eighth, while Ford sits ninth.

Mark Williams v Tom Ford betting tips and predictions

Mark Williams -2.5 frames on the handicap - 1/1

Mark Williams has dominated his recent rivalry with Tom Ford, winning 11 of their 12 previous encounters. His sole defeat came in a 6-5 loss at the UK Championship in 2015.

Williams hasn't had the finest season, with his last three tournament appearances ending in defeat, but the Welshman has had spells of brilliance during this campaign.

The 49-year-old not only won the Macau Masters in December, but he triumphed at the British Open and finished runner-up in the Championship League.

That means the Welshman has reached 40 ranking finals during his career, winning 25 titles, and he warrants strong favouritism in this best-of-19 encounter with Ford, who has lost 11 of their 12 previous meetings.

Williams tends to come alive with the World Championships in sight, and this is excellent match practice ahead of snooker's pinnacle later this month.

Williams has dominated this recent rivalry, but they are yet to meet over anything above a best-of-nine format, and this longer match ought to suit the Welshman.

The Welshman didn't qualify for the Tour Championship, which features only the best 12 players of the season, last year, but he did in 2022.

On that occasion, Williams lost 10-9 to Ronnie O'Sullivan, but Ford is unlikely to pose the same problem.

Ford is playing in the Tour Championship for the first time in his career, and his record at the World Championship - he's never gone beyond the opening round - suggests that Williams holds the aces, given the length of the format.

Williams is 4/9 to advance to the quarter-final, where he would meet Judd Trump, and it is easy to see why, given his dominance in this rivalry.

But those looking to eke out some extra value should take Williams -2.5 frames on the handicap, meaning he must win 10-7 or better.

Ford is an excellent break-builder, but to win eight or more frames against Williams, who is still one of the greatest tacticians in the game, looks like a tall ask.

The Welshman, having dominated this rivalry, should be oozing with self-belief, and he will be keen to return to winning ways ahead of a trip to the Crucible.

Under 2.5 centuries - 1/1

While Williams is expected to maintain his dominance over Ford, it may not be the highest quality encounter and under 2.5 centuries looks like a good bet.

There have been only three centuries across their last seven encounters, and while this extended format will obviously help, the odds are still way off the mark.

Neither player appears to perform as well as they did at the start of the season, and it would need to go close to the distance for there to be three or more centuries.

Ford has had 23 centuries this season, but he is averaging one every 15 frames, while Williams, who has had 33 centuries, is averaging one every 9.36 frames.

Ford suffered a 5-4 defeat to Robbie Williams in his last appearance at the World Open, and although he has had a century in his previous three matches, this is going to be a tricky test against one of the shrewdest players in the business.

Williams will make life tough for his opponent, and that means big breaks may be hard to come by, making under 2.5 centuries the play at 1/1.

The Welshman has had only two centuries across his last six matches and, while he is capable of posting lofty breaks, winning the frame will be the chief objective.

That would also apply to Ford, who will be well aware that he is the underdog, and getting frames on the board would be of more value to him.
