Mark Williams is a four-time UK Championship finalist, winning in 1999 and 2002, and he has been rolling back the years this season, winning the Champion of Champions tournament last time out.
He will be looking to reach the last 16 of this year’s tournament as he takes on Stuart Bingham, who has never gone past the semi-finals in this event.
Mark Williams -1.5 frames - 10/11
Williams has had an impressive season so far, reaching the final of the Saudi Arabia Masters before losing in a decider to Judd Trump.
The Welshman followed that by winning the Champion of Champions last time out, beating Baia Yulu, world champion Kyren Wilson and Neil Robertson en route to the final.
He then overcame Xiao Guodong 10-6 in the final to lift his first title of the season, lifting him to sixth in the world rankings and just one spot behind Ronnie O’Sullivan.
The Welsh Potting Machine reached the quarter-finals of the UK Championship last year before losing to eventual runner-up Ding Junhui 6-5, and he has been handed a last-32 clash against a struggling Bingham this year.
Bingham famously won the world championship in 2015 but has won just two ranking titles since then, the most recent of those coming in 2018.
Ballrun’s ranking has taken a tumble as a result of his struggles in recent years, slipping down to 25th in the standings.
He has not gone past the sixth round of any ranking tournament this season and has departed in the early rounds of the British Open, Northern Ireland Open and Xi’an Grand Prix recently.
Bingham has never made major inroads at this tournament, reaching the semi-finals on three occasions (2013, 2014 and 2018), while he failed to qualify for the main draw in 2023.
Williams knocked Bingham out of the recent Saudi Arabia Masters with a 6-2 success and it is not hard to see the Welshman recording another comfortable victory in this one.
Seven of Williams’ last 10 games have seen him win by at least two frames and he is fancied to add to that tally in this clash.
Under 1.5 match centuries - 10/11
Although both of these men are known as prolific break-builders, they have not quite hit their century-scoring heights of late and this could turn out to be a tactical affair..
Bingham has made only 13 centuries this season, at a rate of one per 13 frames, while Williams is averaging one ton every nine frames.
The Welshman made just four centuries at the Champion of Champions, while there were no centuries made in Williams’ victory against Bingham at the Saudi Arabia Masters.
