Tom Ford picked up a deserved success over Ricky Walden in the first round of the World Championship but he had never previously progressed beyond that stage and his inexperience could tell as he faces Judd Trump in the second round.
The Ace in the Pack has been one of the standout stars of the snooker season but still has just one world title to his name so will be desperate to add to that tally this year. He comfortably got the better of Hossein Vafaei in the first round and can repeat the trick against Ford.
Judd Trump -4.5 match handicap - 8/11
Judd Trump has been in outstanding form this season, winning 63 of the 78 games he has played and 389 of the 608 frames he has contested.
The Ace in the Pack has dominated the campaign along with Ronnie O’Sullivan and as a result the pair head the betting for the World Championship.
Over the last 12 months the Bristolian has won the English Open, Wuhan Open, Northern Ireland Open, German Masters and World Open along with finishing runner-up in the World Grand Prix.
Trump cruised past Hossein Vafaei 10-5 in the first round of this year’s World Championship and should be able to overcome a -4.5 frame deficit in the match handicap market again in this clash with Tom Ford.
The 34-year-old has met Ford in three previous World Championships, winning 10-8 twice and 10-3.
The scoreline this time may be closer to the latter than the former given his record this season and his opponents’ indifferent recent showings.
Ford has steadily risen through the ranks and his current spot as world number 14 is his highest ever.
He reached the final of another ranking event, the International Championship, in December but is still to win his first ranking title.
The 40-year-old has also struggled in 2024, losing 10 of his 13 games in the build up to the Crucible.
Ford has fallen at the first hurdle in the recent Players Championship, World Open and Tour Championship and looks likely to be outclassed in this one.
Take Trump to overcome a -4.5 frame deficit on the handicap in this clash.
Over 3.5 match centuries - 8/11
Judd Trump is well known for his brand of attractive snooker and break building and it could be on full display in this match.
The Ace in the Pack has 84 centuries already this season and looks likely to add to that tally against Ford.
The 2019 world champion failed to register one in his win over Hossein Vafaei but that is unlikely to remain the case for long.
His opponent has also been in good scoring form this season, his tally of 27 centuries is the most he has registered in any campaign, and he can more than play his part in a high-scoring clash.
Ford managed breaks of 138, 136, 133 and 114 in his recent loss to Mark Williams at the Tour Championship and if he is anywhere near that level, the line of 3.5 match centuries looks in big danger.
There were three centuries and a break of 97 when these two last met at the Crucible in 2020 and they have both improved that part of their game since then so take the overs in this one.
