Judd Trump v Ding Junhui: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Judd Trump will be hoping to secure his place in the semi-finals of the Masters when he takes on Ding Junhui at Alexandra Palace.

The pre-tournament withdrawal of defending champion Ronnie O’Sullivan meant that 2023 winner Trump was favourite to regain his crown and the Ace in the Pack made a blistering start, easing past Barry Hawkins 6-1 in his curtain-raiser.

Next up in the quarter-final for two-time champion Trump is a clash with Ding, who claimed his sole Masters crown with victory over Marco Fu in 2011.

The Chinese cueman has been resurgent over the last few seasons, showing some of his old sparkle, and his belief should also be high after his gutsy 6-5 win over Mark Williams in round one.

Trump is rightly favourite, having triumphed in five of their last six meetings, but it may not be as routine as the odds suggest.

The second seed continues to hold his form well and appears to go deep in virtually every tournament he contests, but Ding is a confidence player that can prove devastating when on a roll.

Judd Trump v Ding Junhui betting tips and predictions

Ding Junhui +2.5 frames on handicap - 8/11

While Trump’s 6-1 thrashing of Hawkins in round one may suggest he is in absolutely scintillating form, the victory featured only one break over 60 and improvement may be needed for him to record a similarly convincing win over Ding.

That is because Ding has been in fine fettle for a while now and these illustrious events are when we often see the best of him, highlighted by his run to the UK Championship final in two of the last three years.

The Chinese cueman also claimed his first ranking title in five years on home soil at the International Championship in November which has enabled him to return to the world’s top 10.

Ding has rediscovered some belief that had gone missing and he is now finding a way to win tight matches, something which had for so long been his downfall.

The 37-year-old kept his nerve to edge past Williams 6-5 in his Masters opener and he compiled six breaks over 60, showing himself to be in excellent shape if given a scoring chance.

That suggests that Trump may have his work cut out and Ding certainly makes appeal on the handicap, with +2.5 frames the line given by the layers.

The Chinese sensation has a poor recent record against Trump but he did beat him 6-4 in the semi-final of the UK Championship two seasons ago and is unlikely to go down without a fight.

Under 1.5 centuries - 11/8

Compiling centuries has been harder than many may have anticipated so far at Alexandra Palace, with the eight first-round matches featuring a total of only 10 tons and this may be cagier than anticipated.

Both players are excellent break-builders that will want an open, free-flowing game, but they will also be wary of that approach playing into the hands of their attack-minded opponent.

So the tactical aspect of the game could be even more vital in this quarter-final clash and going under 1.5 centuries could be the approach to take.

In five of the last seven rivalries between this pair, there has been one or fewer century breaks and the atmosphere and high stakes suggest this recent showdown could follow a similar narrative.
