Joe O'Connor v Kyren Wilson: Prediction, Tips, Odds and Start Time

Kyren Wilson has earned the reputation of being a Crucible specialist and the Warrior will be eyeing another deep run in Sheffield given the draw has opened right up for him.

Wilson has made the quarter-final of the Sheffield showpiece in six of the last eight seasons, a run bolstered by his runner-up effort to Ronnie O’Sullivan in 2020, and he will be delighted that his last-16 encounter comes against Joe O'Connor rather than Mark Selby,

O'Connor sprung a surprise with his 10-6 victory over four-time world champion Selby - a good friend and mentor of his who also hails from Leicester.

That effort should be respected, though, considering this is O'Connor’s Crucible debut and his temperament and focus were not deterred despite this being the biggest occasion of his snooker life.

Joe O'Connor v Kyren Wilson betting tips and predictions

Over 21.5 frames - 8/11

Wilson is 1/3 to seal his seventh Crucible quarter-final in the last nine years and, while he warrants favouritism, that may be a tad shorter than should be the case against such a dangerous qualifier in O'Connor.

The 10-1 scoreline Wilson put up against Dominic Dale in the first round looks good on paper but he was put under minimum pressure against a 52-year-old opponent who admitted he struggled to settle on his first Crucible appearance since 2014.

So it would be reasonable to expect a tougher test against O'Connor, who should be riding the crest of a wave following his 10-6 victory over four-time champion Selby.

The 28-year-old held his nerve superbly despite it being his first taste of the Crucible and, while playing a mentor of his may have helped, there is no reason to expect him to blink against Wilson.

O'Connor is solid in virtually every department of his game as he scores heavily, has excellent safety play and rarely looks flustered by a tricky situation.

So he should be able to show himself in good light against the Warrior and, even if coming out on the losing side, it may be a closely-fought encounter.

These two have shared their four previous meetings evenly at two wins apiece and two of those have gone to a deciding frame, albeit coming over a much shorter format.

But, playing over three sessions, should make for a topsy-turvy encounter with both players likely to have an eight-frame period when they come out on top.

There is every hope that O'Connor can make it a close contest and going over 21.5 frames at 8/11 is the approach to take.

That means 13-9 or better either way would be rewarded as a winner, which may give punters an extra frame to play with over the 4/5 on O'Connor +3.5 frames on the handicap.

Over 1.5 Joe O'Connor centuries - 6/4

O'Connor is a heavier scorer than he is given credit for and, in a contest which promises to go long, backing him to have over 1.5 centuries at 6/4 looks a value interest.

The Leicester cueman had breaks of 122 and 101 in his 10-6 victory over Selby in round one while he also compiled a century break in his two qualifying wins over Julien Leclercq and Matthew Selt.

O'Connor is 21st on the century standings this season, having had 21 centuries across his 53 matches, but the majority of those matches are played over a best-of-five in the Championship League or a best-of-seven.

There should also be plenty of scope for Wilson to add a century or two to the mix, which is why punters may also want to consider over 3.5 centuries at 6/5.

Despite his 10-1 drubbing of Dale, Wilson had only one century but he also had breaks of 96, 88, 77, 75 and 73.

He is also second to only Judd Trump this season on century breaks, having registered 62 this season.
