Jak Jones v Si Jiahui: Prediction, Tips, Odds and Start Time

Si Jiahui reached the semi-finals of the World Championship on his debut at the Crucible last year, and the Chinese cueman got the better of three-time Sheffield hero Mark Williams in round one of this term’s event, but he is likely to fall short in his second match of the week.

Jak Jones was an excellent 10-4 winner over the talented Zhang Anda in the first round and now one of Jones or Si will be heading for the Crucible quarter-finals.

Jak Jones to beat Si Jiahui - 7/4

Si enjoyed an amazing run to the semi-finals of last year’s World Championship, where the Chinese cueman beat Shaun Murphy, Robert Milkins and Anthony McGill before a narrow defeat to the eventual champion Luca Brecel at the last-four stage.

The 21-year-old confirmed his love for the Crucible with a thrilling 10-9 victory over three-time world champion Mark Williams in the first round of this season’s Sheffield showpiece, and the Zhejiang cueman now takes on Jones for a place in the quarter-finals.

It hasn’t been a fantastic season for Si away from the World Championship, with a series of early exits from ranking events, but the young cueman did make the final of the German Masters and the 21-year-old is undoubtedly a potter with huge potential.

It’s difficult to look beyond the Crucible form of Si, which has been superb, but this is the first time that the Chinese ace has been a heavy favourite to win a Sheffield contest and with that comes increased pressure and expectation on young shoulders.

Aside from the pressure, it’s worth remembering that Jones made the last eight on his World Championship debut last term, and the Welshman appears to be a potter who relishes the longer format and multi-session matches at the Sheffield showpiece.

The Silent Assassin got the better of both Ali Carter and Neil Robertson at the Crucible last year and the 30-year-old downed the capable Jamie Clarke and Zhou Yuelong to qualify for the World Championship, with this good form continuing with a commanding 10-4 win over Zhang Anda in the first round.

Anda has been one of the top performers on tour this season, and the fact that Jones was able to dismiss the challenge of the Chinese star so comfortably has to be a good sign for the Welshman’s prospects of defeating Si and reaching the quarter-finals.

Offers of 7/4 certainly appear to underplay the chance of Jones beating Si in the last-16 Crucible showdown.

Over 22.5 frames - 11/10

Si has played five Crucible matches in his career, three of those have gone to a deciding frame and one contest finished 17-15. This is a best-of-25-frame second-round Crucible clash and it could play to get long on frames.

Jones is a tough competitor who won’t make life easy for the Chinese favourite, as he showed when going down narrowly 13-10 to Mark Allen in last season’s World Championship.

Si is a 4/9 shot to reach the quarter-finals, but this second-round tie may be closer than the prices suggest and odds-against on over 22.5 frames look like a play.
