German Masters betting tips and predictions

Barry Hawkins to win the German Masters - 14/1

The German Masters is a unique event and the atmosphere generated by the Berlin crowd is only behind snooker’s three triple crown competitions.

The Tempodrom setup has four outside matches, surrounding the main table and the passionate fans certainly make their presence felt.

Judd Trump has dominated the event in recent years, winning three of the last five stagings of the German Masters and it’s no surprise to see the Ace as the 11/4 market leader.

However, the Bristolian wasn’t at his peak in the Masters earlier this month and the Ace looks opposable in Germany.

The withdrawal of Ronnie O’Sullivan and Ding Junhui has certainly complicated the betting landscape and it was no surprise to see a whole host of performers in the top half of the draw cut on the outright market.

Barry Hawkins looks likely to be a key beneficiary of O’Sullivan’s absence and, at 14/1, there still looks to be some each-way value on offer.

The Hawk has been a fantastic performer in his career and has been ranked inside the world’s top 16 in 10 of the last 12 years.

The Kent cueman’s position at the pinnacle of the sport has been put under pressure in recent seasons, but the Hawk has delivered an excellent response.

He won the European Masters last season and that return to trophy-winning form has been built on this term.

Hawkins has landed quarter-finals spots at the Xi’an Grand Prix and English open during the current campaign and only went down 10-8 to Trump in the final of the UK Championship.

The York event remains one of the most prestigious competitions in snooker, and the fact that Hawkins produced such a fine UK Championship display, indicates that he can still compete at the pinnacle of the sport.

The 45-year-old gets his German Masters campaign underway with a contest against Alfie Burden and the Londoner has no recent form to suggest he can pose much of a threat.

Dave Gilbert, who is the 20th seed in Germany, is the highest-ranked opponent Hawkins can face prior to the quarter-finals and there is no chance of a last-eight contest against O’Sullivan with the Rocket absent from the event.

The draw looks to have opened up nicely and Hawkins has the quality to swoop on the German Masters prize.

Mark Selby to win the German Masters - 13/2

Mark Selby looked a potential Masters winner when hammering Ali Carter 6-1 in round one of the Alexandra Palace event earlier this month, and while the promise the Jester from Leicester showed in that contest was ultimately not delivered, it could pay to keep the faith with the 41-year-old.

The four-time world champion was beaten 6-2 by Mark Allen in the Alexandra Palace quarter-finals, but that result may have been a little unjust.

Four of the six racks won by the Pistol came from frame scores of 73-72, 74-71, 69-42 and 74-35 and it’s clear that Selby can be considered a little unfortunate to lose by such a wide margin.

Selby looks to have been housed in a fairly weak part of the draw and, at 13/2, he is another player who could reward an each-way play.
