Gary Wilson and Stuart Bingham go head-to-head in an intriguing first-round World Championship contest and Wilson will be hoping to continue this season's excellent form.
Bingham hasn’t enjoyed much success over the last 12 months, although the Basildon potter has the small matter of the 2015 World Championship title on his record.
Gary Wilson -1.5 frames - 4/5
Wilson arrives in Sheffield for only his fifth World Championship appearance, but the Tyneside cueman also makes the journey while in the form of his life.
The 38-year-old has claimed the Scottish Open and Welsh Open crowns this season, with the latest of those successes coming in Llandudno in February.
Those titles are added to the Scottish Open trophy that Wilson captured last season, and successfully defended in December, and the last 18 months have been the most productive of Wilson's career.
That is a world away from what Bingham has been producing over the last 12 months, with Ball-run having failed to even qualify for the last six ranking events. The 47-year-old's campaign has been highlighted by a run to the quarter-finals of the Scottish Open, but there have been a string of early exits and it is difficult to gain much confidence in Bingham’s game at the moment.
Of course, the Basildon potter did beat Stuart Carrington and Louis Heathcote to qualify for his 14th consecutive Crucible appearance and he of course lifted the Sheffield showpiece in 2015.
However, those qualifying win were both narrow-margin victories, over players ranked outside the world's top 90 positions and Wilson is likely to prove far more difficult to beat.
The Tyneside Terror has made fewer visits to the Crucible, but the 38-year-old reached the semi-finals in 2019 in a run that saw the Wallsend cueman beat Luca Brecel, Mark Selby and Ali Carter along the way.
There are no worries of Wilson failing to produce in Sheffield, or over the grueling best-of-19-frame format, and the back-to-back Scottish Open champion warmed up for the Sheffield showpiece by beating Selby and Zhang Anda on the way to the last-four of the Tour Championship.
Wilson is 4/7 to win, which looks a perfectly acceptable bet, but the 4/5 on offer about the Tyneside potter giving Bingham a 1.5-frame start looks the best value play.
Over 2.5 century breaks @ 4/6
Getting long on centuries could also be worth a punt. Bingham has 17 ton-plus breaks this season, which is inside the top 30 on tour, and while other aspects of his game may have faulted, those numbers suggest that he can still be dangerous amongst the balls.
Wilson has hit 28 century knocks in the current campaign and is within the top 20 on the tour this term. He made runs of 131, 109, 95 and 92 in the first round of last year’s World Championship, while Bingham hit 135 and 126 in his final qualification contest against Heathcote.
A 10-8 victory or similar for Wilson would allow the handicap bet to cop, as well as giving plenty of frames for big breaks to be hit, and over 2.5 centuries rates a solid punt.
